Laptop turns off after pressing ctrl or shift keys

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. When I boot Win XP and get to the desktop, if I press ctrl or the shift key the laptop shuts off immediatly like the power was ripped from it. No formal shutdown at all it just shuts off as if I pulled the plug. Does anyone know whats causing this and how to fix it? Thanks!

Does this happen when using an external keyboard as well?

Yes. I plugged a keyboard into a USB and sure enough, its shuts off. It does it for all Ctrl and Shift keys, not just one side and it happens only after I boot all the way to the desktop. It doesn't do it at the Admin password screen. Just when I get to the desktop. Any suggestions?
