Latitude E6540

Afternoon all,
I have the following system: Latitude E6540, Windows 7 Pro (64 bit), 8 GB Ram, 500 GB HD, 1 or 2 GB video card, i7-4800MQ @2.70GHz.

The trouble this 4 week old machine is having is that of the 4, 3.0 USB ports, only 1 manages to keep my external WD 1 TB hard drive active, online, recognized.  The port on the machines left side towards the rear works like a charm.  The two ports on the right side towards the rear and the one on the right back of the machine all attach the drive, BUT ultimately with in 3-5 minutes drop the drive.  Dell replaced the motherboard this week.  Umm, same results.  Dell had me update drivers, no change.

Anyone have any suggestions?  This is a work laptop and I really need to figure this out and like yesterday.  Yes, Dell knows about it.  I have a case number but I cannot afford to be diverted away from actually working (self employed) at the drop of the hat for hours at a time and get nowhere.  Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

I do not know what my old service tag is, i will see if i can dig through some old emails and see if i can find it..  But as i said, the ONLY solution was to replace the entire laptop..   like i said, they installed 2 boards,  sent me a factory re-install usb flash - THAT FAILED, ultimately it was a entire replacement that fixed my issue.

Hello everyone,

I had the same problem with a WD Element 1 TB and other usb keys (they only works with the USB port on the left side). But another seagate drive worked perfectly on all the 4 ports.

After a lot of searching, I've found a link that helped me solve the problem:

wdc.custhelp.com/.../a-usb-3.0-drive-randomly-disconnects-and-reconnects-from-a-pc

Apparently, this has nothing to do with DELL. it's an incompatibility bug about USB power modes U1 and U2 that occur between some USB 3 drives and the Intel chipset.

The link says that this modes can be disabled by either the chipset driver or the hard disk. I've found a guide to show an option for disabling this power mode in the chipset (so it is suitable for all the drivers) but it only works on windows 8:

www.eightforums.com/.../50276-power-options-add-remove-usb-3-link-power-mangement.html

Anyway, with the utility in the link I was able to fix my WD disk and now it works perfectly.

Hope this can help somebody.

Cheers

if you purchase a product that is expected to work, then it needs to work! period.. disabling anything is not an option for a product that is suppose to work. If you want to disable thats fine, but the premise of this thread is to report what the actual problem is and what the true fix is, the true fix is do what i did. and MAKE DELL get you a replacement laptop if its under warranty. That was the ONLY fix. the replacement laptop did not drop out or require any disabling of anything.. as stated, we know there is a problem with the ports..

I'm having a Dell Latitude E6540, i7, 3 month old. Exactly the sameproblems. External HD (640Gb) USB3 not WD, works fine in other laptops and desktops. USB 3 cable with 2 usb connections, so should provide enough power, started dropping connection 2 weeks ago, connection drops between 15 and 20 times per hour. connection drops using 2 right usb ports, 2 ports at the back of the port replicator, Keeps working when using only 1 left usb port on laptop (I have only one usb port on the left, second port is HDMI).

I thought the drive was dying on me, frustrated because I lost a work because of a corrupted access database (databases don't like disconnects when being written to :-()

Bought a new drive (transcend 2 TB) with a new usb3 cable, same problem !!

Dell, solve this !!!!!

As i have generously stated many posts ago, there is only one fix.. that is to DEMAND a replacement laptop..  i got a refurbished one.. it took several months though.. many many phone calls.. much yelling and frustrations.. but i finally got one shipped.

ultimately the revision number on the refurbished laptop was like  REV 2 .  where as the laptop that was the troubled one was REV 1.0 so there is a difference between the revs...  i have had this refurb laptop for many many months now.. NO USB 3.0 issues period.. not once
