letter keys working as function keys?

So I am loving my Ultrabook - but every now and then the letter keys randomly function as function keys instead of typing letters. For example when I hit the letter "l" it would say highlight a section of text.  I figured out that if I hit Control they go back to typing normally, but can'' figure out what I'm doing to initiate the function. Maybe my palm is hitting the Alt or Fn or Ctrl buttons at the same time while I type?

Thanks for your help, I feel like an idiot for asking, but appreciate any guidance anyone can offer!

Hello Smdaily,

In order to isolate the cause of failure, please try the following steps:

1. Check in Safe Mode if the keys are working fine.

  • Restart the computer.
  • Keep tapping F8 key.
  • The computer goes to Advanced boot Options.
  • Select Safe Mode.
  • Press Enter.
  • Check in safe mode if the keys are working fine. Being in safe mode, follow the step 2.

2. Check in Command Prompt.

  • Click Start.
  • In Search program and files tab type cmd.
  • Press Enter.
  • Check in the Window if the keys are working fine.

In case the keyboard does the same thing in both safe mode and command prompt, consider replacing the keyboard. You may also try connecting an external USB keyboard and check if that works fine.

Please write back for further queries.
