Maxing out RAM
Hey everyone,
My wife has an Inspiron(sp?) 6400 with 1 GB of RAM and would like to max it out to 2 GB. The thing is, while RAM is fairly cheap right now, hiring someone to install it is not. Due to complications of diabetes I don't have the dexterity to do it, either.
However, in the past, she has installed interior components to a couple of my earlier desktops and is pretty good in that respect. I would like to know how difficult it is to open up her laptop and install the new RAM. If it's not too bad, she'll give it a try. So my question is: what are the steps in opening up this laptop to get at the motherboard?
I hope it's not too hard or I guess it's the Geek Squad and I really don't like the idea of giving those guys (just using that name as a reference. I have nothing against the Geek Squad. :emotion-21:) $50 to do it if it can be done at home.
Hoping for good news, here, folks. Thanks in advance for any help. -- SCB :emotion-43:

View the owner's manual for the laptop. With some laptops, it is a matter of using a small Philips screwdriver to loosen the screw that holds the cover in place on the bottom of the laptop like on my Latitude 110L. With some laptops, part of the RAM is under the keyboard like it is with my Latitude D400.

Thank you all for your responses. Looks like this will be an easier task than replacing RAM on my old Dimension. My wife has tiny hands, perfect for this type of work.
This place has always been the best place to go for all things Dell. Great bunch of people here. Thanks again. -- SCB :emotion-21:

This upgrade is really simple after you get the bottom cover off. Just be sure that the new memory strips/cards are fully seated into the sockets when you rotate them down to lock into place. Be sure and ground yourself to the PC by touching the metal surface when handling these cards. Hope this helps.
