Missing Former Mouse control after W XP install
Dear Forum:
I Formatted c: and installed Windows XP Home Ed. Thereafter the touchpad on my Inspiron 7000 reverted to tap activity which I dislike. In the former installation there was a program to control mouse properties that does not exist in the settings that XP has provided now, so I can't turn the tap off, control scrolling, etc. How do you suggest I get that feature back? If it exists on the Dell system software CD how do I install or Repair with that?

Explore-drivers-touch pad-install---2 mins.
maybe remove the mouse (if you got one)

I put my system cd in and went to explore. Of the folders available one was touchpad. I opened setup.exe and the program started to go through the process of installashield(?). A message appeared that indicated the software driver was for windows 95 only. I typed ok and then the program closed. I then went to Dell.com to see if there was an updated driver. I downloaded the only update and it would not load because of the same message etc.
I tried to type this message a little while ago, but using the keyboard caused my point of entry to jump around all over the page and to go back to previous sites that I gave up. I went into setup and disabled the touchpad when I am using another mouse. That has solved all the problems except when typing and not watching, my typing will once in a while jump to where the cursor is.
I appreciate your input, but unless I am misunderstanding your suggestions, I am still having a problem.

Deanna;
I did resolve the problem about the mouse after NO cooperation from Dell, strangely enough. They have always been very precise and prompt, but maybe that my 7000 is now out of warranty has something to do with their reluctance to reply on a timely basis.
I went to Synaptics.com and downloaded their driver for W ME/XP etc and installed it. Suddenly, I had what I had lost, the controls for the Synaptics touchpad installed in this Inspiron. I immediately killed off the Tap to click feature that had been driving me nuts... HOWEVER: Because I retained the ps/2 Microsoft mouse I get a repeated message:
"advanced features overridden because system detects an external mouse" and guess what? The Tap to Click is back!!! I can't seem to kill it off on my touchpad, then reinstall (plug and play) the MS ps/2 mouse and expect the Touchpad to remember that I killed off that feature, so it is still Square One about that. Maybe you do not have an external mouse and don't care...but Synaptics.com seems to be on the ball about XP users and those who need to FIX their W XP glitches. Good Luck!
