I just developed a similar problem. I just installed the latest update from good old microsoft (KB958644) and now my mute button does not function correctly. I've figured out that it's not a case of it not working altogether but when it is pressed once it acts twice. So in effect it's unmuting and then muting again instantly. I've just begun looking for a solution to this problem. If I find something before someone else does I'll reply here.
By the way I'm on a new XPS M1530 (purchased in June) running Vista Ultimate 32bit.
