Mute button stop functioning on Latitude D600
Out of the blue today, the mute button on my Latitude D600 just stopped working. It used to toggle the sound on and off as I press it. Now pressing it only brings up the volume bar.
I tried to search for the solution online but couldn't find any answers. Does anyone else have any idea about this issue?
I am running XP Professional. Thanks.

I have the same problem. The mute button suddenly stopped working, while the volume up and down button still works.

Some off the chart solution that wasn't even related to my problem.
If you guys had better luck with them and obtained a valid solution from them, let me know.
Thanks.

My IT department downgraded my OS from XP to W2K and neither my volume or mute button work.
My D600 uses a Sigmatel audio driver.
Has anyone got a fix for this?
BTW... I've only rebooted my laptop only about 600 times in the last couple of months and geez it doesn't seem to have fixed it.

Finally got an answer back from Dell support. I had to download the quickset tool and it worked. It sets up your power management, etc but my volume and mute buttons actually now work.
You can disable the icon on the task bar and the volume control / mute button still works!
good luck,

I am already running XP with quickset...so it doesn't help me.
I am glad it worked for you though!

Hi,
Our firm has over 150 D600's, running W2K SP3, and we've experienced the same thing on some of our systems.
On one of them, we installed Dell's Quickset app. (so we could use the volume meter as a visual reference) and updated the BIOS to A11. This corrected the problem....but, only temporarily. Two days later, the problem was back again and, unfortunately, we have yet to find a permanent solution for that system.
Who knows? Reinstalling Quickset or updating the BIOS to A11 may correct your issue....it's worth a shot.
Hope this helps,
Ric

I just received a new D600 2 weeks ago, and have the intermittent (mostly not working) volume buttons problem described here. Very annoying for a brand new system.
But, I have found something, and would like others to confirm. When I remove the laptop battery, and boot from AC, the volume keys ALWAYS work fine. (After fully booting, I can then insert the battery, and the keys continue to work.) When I boot with the battery in place (with or without AC power), the volume keys tend not to work.
I believe this problem is a power management / audio driver conflict, which Dell needs to fix. Can others try this, and report back? Enough consistent results should point Dell in the right direction.
