Network Controller Device problems..

Hi, I have an Inspiron 500m. About a month ago, XP went nuts and finally the only route was to reinstall XP.  XP is installed and at the time, I did not have the driver disks from the laptop with me, so installed practically every driver for this model from the Dell.com website.  All seems to be going great...except ONE thing.   Each time I turn on the laptop, I get 'new hardware found'.  In Device Manager there is 'Other Devices' and then 'Network Controllers' that are question marked.  Under properties it says there is no driver installed.  Under properties it says 'this device is not configured correctly. (Code 1). To reinstall drivers, click reinstall'  Then of course there is no driver installed.  Device type says 'other devices', manufacturer says 'unknown' and Location is 'PCI bus 1, device 3, function 0'   I've tried the following: 1. going out online for driver. 2. Uninstalling hardware device, restarting computer and still wants a driver. 3. installing again the entire 'device drivers' Resource CD that came with the computer.   Now, one thing I did differently..the XP is not the disk that came with the laptop. I used the XP disk from my Dimension Dell desktop.   I have no idea what this device even is! I've not gone so far as to disable it entirely as I don't know what it is. I'm able to get online, and everything else seems fine.   Any thoughts?

You need to install the chipset drivers first, and make sure you've installed SP1 (preferably SP2) after that.
