New XPS 15 (9550) Electrical/Static Sound and Occasional Flickering

Whenever I maximise my videos, or load a graphic-intensive page, there is this strange sound that will issue from my laptop. It's sounds like 1 second of white noise we hear on radios when no shows are ongoing, and it's frankly disappointing to experience this given that my laptop is only a day old.

Occasionally, the screen would occasionally flicker too, which is rather alarming.

My setup is i7, FHD, 512SSD and 16gb memory.

What can I do to resolve this?

Thank you.

The screen still flickers and crashes the driver, I am returning the laptop today.

Thanks for letting me know, I'll feed that back to the engineering team that the issues aren't resolved with the new BIOS

I would try the new windows update that came out yesterday. Code name threshold 2 in Windows update. I rarely see any flickering on that update.

I have the same audio issue. So far it only happens with videos -- if I scroll past videos while audio is playing I get this static audio sound. If anyone has ever heard a radiation meter, it's a similar noise to that (yikes). This happens if I use the trackpad scrolling or manually drag the window.

I'm also getting slight audio distortion regardless of whether the window is moving. This sounds more like a murky muffled sound that is more pronounced when the audio is turned up. I also feel the case vibrating while my hands rest on the case, which may be the source of the distortion.

I'll try the bios update and see if that fixes it, but if it doesn't I really hope I can get a replacement because this is a very worrying issue for a brand new laptop to have.

Edit/Update: Bios update didn't fix it for me, but the newest windows 10 update did (Version 10.0.10586). YMMV, of course.

Doesn't fix the subpar speakers unfortunately. I think most of these boils down to the fact that the speakers vibrate the case and make it sound really weird. Ah well..

Found another bug:

This is on the Core i7 (not sure if it affects others)

So when the computer is first booted all is well and running at full speed.

If at any point, you unplug the power cord to use the laptop on battery, obviously the processor scales back to conserve energy.

Here is the issue:

When the power cord is plugged back in to recharge or no longer be portable, the CPU doesn't go back to full power and speed. It locks in a x17 Max Multiplier basically making a 3.2GHz CPU run at approx 1.7GHz. when under load.

Dell Needs to release a BIOS update to resolve this issue ASAP. It is awful, especially if you go to run a game after just being on battery power.  Just browsing the web and such you probably won't notice.

Download CPU-Z if you wish to verify this on your machine.

On a side note: I haven't had a flicker yet with the .7 BIOS update and new Windows 10 update.

I also have random flicker in XPS 9343 (2015) with W10.

There are a lot of people with this problem but still no solution.

@DanMc85 we are aware of that bug with the CPU speed and are working on resolving it

@rs2pro the 9343 flicker issue with Windows 10 has been resolved. Click here and follow the instructions

We're still working on fixing the 9350 flicker issue.

So today I decided to sadly forget about the xps15.  When you search "dell 9550 issues" in google the amount of problems are incredible.  Ssd failures, cpu problems, screen flickering, audio issues, gpu failures, mic/headphone jack problems, battery problems, thunderbolt connection problems, external monitor connection problems.  The list goes on and on.  I also had some of these issues along with a problem with my monitor not staying closed on one side when I carried it.  Had a small gap on the right side.  Could only imagine that if it has all these issues out of the box, imagine a week, month or year down the lne.    For the 4th replacement in a week of a 2099 dollar computer this is crazy.  I do not want to send my computer to dell every other week.  Tech support for dell is horrible.  Spent three days going back and forth with them and I felt like they had no clue what to due.  I decided to go with the surface book.  Not what I really wanted but I got a huge discount for all my troubles.  Dell you should be ashamed.  You sent models to reviewers that were probably tested dozens of times to make sure they worked perfectly.  Just so people would praise the product and get people to spend money on it.  Then when you actually sent out consumer computers you threw together a *** 0 quality controlled p.o.s.  if you own this computer and you have issues think about the long term.

Honestly, I am with you here. I just got a replacement power brick yesterday and it still makes audible coil noise when plugged in, I am running the latest BIOS, drivers, and Windows update and I have gotten display crashes, HDMI issues, freezing and sound problems all in the last day.

Every issue this laptop has had is something I could probably tolerate on a machine 1/4 the price like what it replaced, but this is a $2500 flagship. It is absolutely unacceptable.

Has anyone else here gotten a display issue where it displays like a screen tear, but in a diagonal line between the corners of the screen? I was mirroring to a TV and the TV showed a distinct line from top left to bottom right while moving and the laptops display showed the same line from top right to bottom left..

If you are experiencing flickering, one thing that can cause it is installing hyper-v.

Hi, thanks for your answer @DELL-Colin H, I have installed the drivers but the flicker continues. Maybe hardware issue?

Thanks.

@rs2pro That's strange as that driver has fixed it for every other user with the issue. Can you PM me with a bit more info on your issue;

  • Service Tag of your system
  • When does the flicker happen - in a specific program or random?
  • When it happens how long does it last for?
  • What BIOS do you have?
  • What Chipset version?
  • What Video driver version
  • Are there any error messages on screen?
  • Does it Flicker in BIOS/ Diagnostics?
  • Does disabling C States, TurboBoost in the BIOS affect the flicker?

Thanks

In most cases this is not the issue cause windows 10 home does not bave hyper-v.  Like my 4 9550 did not

I just got mine in the mail and I have the same static sound. I can make it recreate this sound buy holding F12 (the brightness button). It also makes the sound randomly when I use the touch pad.

I updated the Bios and I didn't fix it.

It's so frustrated to buy these premium Windows products and they do this *** right out of the box.
