Dell never had a recovery disk, just the XP reinstallation disk, so you did the right installation. Did you overlook the Notebook System Software when you downloaded the drivers? That needs to be installed first with the Chipset drivers or the rest of the drivers do not install correctly. Go back to Dell Support and get that software. It's under System Utilities.
i had the same sort of and i had to reformat probably 3 times and then i went to dell drivers and upgraded the sound audio drivers, and reinstalled them. i hope can help you liz
