No sound

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron B130 that I recently reformatted.  I lost the dell system recovery disks so I just did a straight reformat using XP. I then downloaded all the drivers from the dell site.  Everything is working fine except for the sound.  The Sigmatel driver is installed. But I get no sound with either headphones or speakers. I've gone through the Microsoft sound troubleshooter and the dell site.  When I restarted, I checked the bios and then ran the diagnostics test using the symptom tree.  I clicked 'no sound' and it tested all the speakers and I could hear all the sounds so the sound card is working.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.  What the heck else could it be? Any help is appreciated.

Dell never had a recovery disk, just the XP reinstallation disk, so you did the right installation. Did you overlook the Notebook System Software when you downloaded the drivers? That needs to be installed first with the Chipset drivers or the rest of the drivers do not install correctly. Go back to Dell Support and get that software. It's under System Utilities.

i had the same sort of and i had to reformat probably 3 times and then i went to dell drivers and upgraded the sound audio drivers, and reinstalled them. i hope can help you liz
