No 'Wireless Zero Configuration'

Question

I have an Inspiron 2200. I am trying to set up a Wireless Network Connection.

When I get to the screen asking to choose a wireless network connection, there are none displayed.

Now, I am attempting to set up a wireless network connectiion. I tried to follow the instructions below.

Right-click right the Wireless Network Connection and then click View Available Wireless Networks.
    "Click here" if the message Windows cannot configure this wireless connection appears.
       1. Click Change advanced settings.
       2. Click the Wireless Networks tab.
          "Click here" if the Wireless Network tab is not seen.
             1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
             2. Click Switch to Classic View in the upper-left corner when available.
             3. Double-click Adminstrative Tools.
             4. Double-click Computer Management.
             5. Click the plus button to the left of Services and Applications.
             6. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
             7. Choose Automatic from the drop down menu next to Startup Type:, and the click the Start button.
             8. Click Apply and the OK.
       3. Click Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.
       4. Click OK

I am fine until step 6. There is no "Wireless Zero Configuration" to click.

What do I do?

'When I get to the screen asking to choose a wireless network connection, there are none displayed'.   do you have a wireless router as you can't set up a wireless network if there is no wireless signal from a router.

In the System Configuration Utility there is a list of services running. I have a suspicion that one has been truned off.

Is there a list of services necessary for WLAN?

I looked in Control Panel. I didn't see Dell Wireless Center. I looked in Serices (Local). I didn't see Dell Wireless Center. Where is Dell Wireless Center?

For Wireless Zero Configuration, what is shown is:

Name Status Startup Type Log On As

Wireless Zero Configuration Started Automatic Local System

No.  It is in neither place.   What do I do? Is Dell Wireless Center going to fix the problem? It must be available somewhere?

I know this is going to end up very embarrasing for me, but onward nonetheless.

What I see is:

No wireless networks were found in range.

Make sure the wirless switch on your computer is on.

To see an updated list, click "Refresh network list."

1. There is a wireless network in range. Sitting not more than 3 inches from the 2200 is a Linksys wireless router with which I am able to use with my wonderful, light, cheap ($349) but small Eee PC.

2. I have looked all over the 2200 and all over the net for a physical switch. I can't find it. I have repeated pressed Fn + F2 with no improvement.

3. Clicking "Refresh network list" hasn't helped either.

Now, in the Sys Tray is a "Wirelss Network Connection" icon with a red X that says "Not Connected."

Isn't there some visible indicator that it is turned on, like in the Sys Tray or something?

Still no.   'Searching for wireless networks in range . . .'   and it comes back with the earlier message:   'No wireless networks were found in range . . . .'

Things have changed. I think I ought to start a new thread, but . . . .

I have spent a great deal of time looking around on the net. I finally found R151517.EXE. Being the wild and crazy guy that I am, I ran it.

Things have changed.

Unchanged is the computer with the two arcs and big red X in the systray. However, joining that icon is another icon which has 4 vertical bars pointing upward with each bar progressively longer as you move to the right. Placing the curser on it shows the text "Wireless Network Connection Wireless Connection unavailable."

Clicking Start > Settings > Contorl Panel > Network Connections and looking under Lan or High Speed Internet

shows "Local Area Connection" and the "Wireless Network Connection" with the big red X. It shows nothing else just as it did before.

Now, the weird news is that if I click Start > Settings > Network Connections (BYPASSING Control Panel) Wireless Network Connection, voila, I get to my wireless network I called Henrietta whereas before there was the message about no wireless networks found in range.

So, now, I guess my first questions are what do I do with the computer with the arcs and big red X in Network Connections and why isn't Henrietta there

I am having the same problem setting up my wireless connection.   I can not find the Wireless Zero Configuration, any ideas what to do? I have an Inspiron 6000
