Overheating caused serious screen issue on XPS - no longer usable
For months the XPS has been overheating and turning itself off while sitting on my desk. Not great but I could live with it. Recently, I went to visit a colleague and put the XPS in a protective sleeve without turning it off and for once it didn't turn off by itself when overheated and now the screen looks like the below. I am assuming this is a hardware problem? Works fine when plugged in to an external screen btw.
Any ideas?

If the system is no longer overheating, then a replacement screen will function fine. There is also the possibility that if the system overheated enough or for as long as you mention it was doing so, that the mainboard was damaged as well - so you may well replace the screen only to see that the problem isn't completely solved, or that another one arises.
In any event, the screen needs to be replaced - this one is toast.

It looks like this is a touchscreen or a glass-front model - in which case it's not just the screen that needs replacement but the entire top half of the system. You're probably looking at somewhere in the $250-350 range for the parts, plus labor.
It's not inordinately difficult but the screen is a sealed assembly - you'll need the entire top half of the system.

It appear placing laptop in the sleeve and without turn it off is causing the system to overheat. Please watch the Dell video below on how to avoid laptop overheating issues.

These replies have completely missed the point. I don't have an overheating issue now I have a screen gone berserk issue. Please see the image in my original post.

Thanks, ejn63. Is a replacement screen a user-replaceable part (I am fairly handy) or does this need to go back to Dell? Guess I need to estimate the cost/risk benefit if the mainboard is indeed also toast.
