Sounds like SpyHunter has "corrected" fake issues. I just did some Googling and SpyHunter has been known to cause issues like that. I recommend reinstalling Windows. You can read more about SpyHunter here, quietman7 has a great post: www.bleepingcomputer.com/.../spyhunter-vs-malwarebytes-vs-iobit
Thanks. I did a fair amount of googling before going with SpyHunter and concluded it was a solid choice. Maybe not, but it did clear up a crippling adware infection.
I have read that others with the same symptoms have seen their laptops move to the sign-in screen spontaneously, after days in a couple of cases. Before I reinstall windows, which I don't know how to do anyway, I want to be fairly sure there's no point in waiting, or booking travel to Lourdes.
I waited 24 hours, was still seeing blue please wait screen with white spinning circle. Tried suggestion I found on this board by RaviBC from last Oct and turned the machine off several times when the Dell logo appeared. Was supposed to bring up a troubleshooting page from startup options I could use to solve a corrupted OS.
The startup options screen never appeared, so I tried once again to reboot, and it worked. Everything seemed fine except Chrome was slow, so I ran SpyHunter again, and it found another 58 issues. (By the way, I had run through the list of 1,300+ the first time, and all of them came with explanations of what they were.) At the moment, everything is working the way it should.
SpyHunter removed a program called SaleItCoupon, which I hadn't been able to uninstall via Control Panel/Programs. Apparently, it embeds itself in several places to ensure that it can't be deleted conventionally. Going from my experience, I can find no reason to denigrate SpyHunter.
