problems with Latitude E6500 / E6400 & E-Port Replicator

I would like to hear if anyone has the following problem

When replacing the laptop back in the port replicator the laptop freezes,  only restart of laptop (power down) works.

 This happens on average every 2nd time,  I have the problem on 2 x E6400 / 1 x E6500

all have latest bios and power management.

For Windows 7 I found that if I set the power profile while docked to high performance it never happened. On Windows XP if I set profiles for docked and undocked it never reproduced the symptoms as well.

After setting my E6500's Power settings while docked to be High Performance (running Windows 7) and setting up the event log to email me when they uncleanly shutdown I have yet to have an email stating that an unclean shutdown occurred. I've double checked this with a select few users that constantly docked/undocked their units and they confirmed they had no lockup issues.

Hi SJ - I never found a "clean" fix. But experimentally I found that if I always: (a) manually reset display settings to the full screen, (b) disable my wi-fi, (c) turn off my USB mouse . . . then re-docking has never frozen the computer.

It feels like a "dance during the right moon phase" sort of hack, but so far it has worked. I tried only doing 1 or 2 of those steps and would still occasionally get hard-crashes. All three seems to be magic and I gave up trying to figure out why after that. - Best of luck.

I'm having the Same issue with a E6520 and the docking station.  But I noticed I can login with the ethernet unplugged from the docking station.

Maybe dell is testing this without an active ethernet connection to the docking station, that requires a domain login.

Hence if they can not duplicate the problem they can not really address it.

Can you elaborate on how to run "Dell Updates"?

I had to use the Dell Driver analyzer. From their site it asks for the Service Tag, if you can't find it they have a utility that will locate it from their website.

This will update all the drivers to current. It is also helpful if this is a work computer that was wiped and just had windows install its generic drivers for everything.

After everything updated (i think there was a bios update also) and I rebooted the problem went away.

Your post is almost entirely useless.

There is no such things as "Dell Driver analyzer", or at least it does not update all the drivers to current.

Also it does not help to clearly identify the root cause of the problem, or the exact workaround- For example which particular driver needs to be updated: the graphic card? the chipset?, etc...

The correct program name, as seen in Windows 7, is Dell Client System Update.

In short: I just ran it, it offered me to update 7 non critical drivers including Dell Feature Pack (??).

I will tell if it solve the issue here, I will edit this post-

Anyway before trying this "Dell client System Update", I had upgraded the NVS 5200M, the Intell HD graphics 4000, the bios...no luck. (even after reboot).

I'll detail what drivers were updated now-

Somewhat my bios was not updated to latest version (A09) but not visible from DELL UK website...

Anyway, the bios was NOT the root cause as I updated with  Dell Client System Update those 7 updates, and the BIOS did not installed, neither did the Nvidia or the HD Audio.

After restart, and starting the " Dell Client System Update" again, I still had those 3 things to update, but the problem was resolved: I could see the external screen when docked.

Then I proceed to manually install the A11 bios, from a link in  Dell Client System Update, restarted, and *bam*, issue reoccured, no more external output... :/

Anyway, i'm going to fiddle with those drivers and make sure I have all latest and see.

Install and run the Dell Client System Update.

I just ran it, it offered me to update 7 non critical drivers including Dell Feature Pack.

I haven't not accurately find the root cause, or which individual driver needs to be installed, but it worked:

After the first installations made by Dell Client System Update, the issue disappeared, I could see my session in the external screen when docked after boot.

So I guess that's a workaround to try, and a suggested answer.

I am experiencing the same issues.  Computer hangs when put back on docking station.  I must shut down and reboot, but I can do this on the docking station.  I purchased the docking station back in 2009 with my first Precision M4700 laptop.  When my computer was stolen, I purchased another M4700 on purpose because it would match my old docking station.  I have a camera and am using Windows 7.
