Problems with my laptop shutting down randomly.

I've had my Inspiron 15r Special Edition with Windows 8 for about a week or so, and I must say I am very pleased with it. The only issue I've been having is that the laptop will sometimes shut down spontaneously, without any prior warning or error message. Upon booting back up, there is no error message or any instance to show that the computer suffered some sort of software bug. At first I thought it was a problem with overheating, because the shutdowns were always followed by the sound of the internal fans speeding up. But now I'm convinced it must be a battery issue, because this problem has never happened while the computer was charging. Any idea what the issue is?

Hi Mr. Clayton,

Does the computer freeze before shutting down?

Disconnect the battery and connect the adapter to the computer and check if the computer shuts down.

Also try using the computer on battery.

I recommend using the computer in safe mode with networking (restart the computer and tap F8 on Dell logo and select safe mode with networking).

Check the behavior of computer in safe mode.

Run hardware diagnostics as well. Restart the computer by holding the FN and Power button simultaneously. Let the diagnostics complete.

Awaiting your response!

No, the computer does not freeze before shutting down. It simply powers down and the internal fans begin to speed up. I also noticed it does still happen when the computer is plugged in. I will try using safe mode next.

I'm waiting to see how the computer reacts plugged in without a battery. However, neither pressing F8 at the Dell logo nor holding Fn and the Power button at the same time had any affect. I'm not sure if my laptop has these features or if I'm simply attempting them wrong.

I'm almost positive the problem is overheating. What are the recommended fixes for overheating?

Hi Mr. Clayton,

I would suggest you to clean the air vents regularly with a can of compressed air. Always ensure that you use the laptop on a flat surface.

Also flash the latest BIOS from the below site.
