Problems with starting Windows XP

Hello. This is my first time posting on the Community, so I will see how it goes.

I had this problem occur last night. I started up my computer, and everything was going fine. I even got to the load screen for Windows XP. However, after the little blue bar ran across the screen twice, I got the Blue Screen of Death. The picture I will post on here is not from my computer, but someone who had a similar problem. I ran a Diagnostic on my computer and I came up with the following:

Start DST Short Test
Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146

When I let the test continue, I got this second message:

Error Code: 1000-0141 No Hard Drive Detected.

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a competent tech guy and he said that he believes that the XP OS has corrupted and that I need to repair XP and it will work. I want to know if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Just to re-explain what happened...I DO get to the Windows XP Load Screen, but then I get the blue screen.

Here is an image depicting what happens on my computer screen. I am using a Dell Inspiron E1705.

Oh....just an update on my problem...

I ran the Chkdsk in the Repair Console screen after running the XP OS disc, and it seemed to have fixed my problem. However, I intend on getting an external hard drive to back up my files when/if my hard drive goes out.

The hard drive is toast -- you'll need a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive as a replacement.

If the BIOS still sees the drive, purchase a 2.5" 9.5 mm EIDE notebook drive enclosure and mount the drive into it.  Attach it to a working system by USB and see what you can read.

If the drive is totally unreadable, it will require professional recovery - that will run you $2,000+ easily - but DriveSavers can work miracles if you must have the data back.

Alright. I am sure that is what it is, but my friend recommended that I try to repair XP OS just in case. I figured based on what others have said that it was the hard drive, but I am just trying all my options before I buy a new one.

Also, how would I go about retrieving the data from my "toasted" hard drive? If you explained this in a previous thread, please link me to it. Thanks.

It's not data that is worth $2,000+...it is mainly just pictures and music that I have collected. In fact, I had an 80 GB hard drive originally and used about half of it...but even that half was of stuff I never really needed nor cared for...so maybe this problem is a slight blessing in disguise.

Thanks for the help. One more question...how could I determine if the drive was still detectable by the BIOS?
