Geeek204, cmspaz is correct in saying the clock speed will adjust as and when required, thereby conserving power and minimizing heat, but if you must you can install Notebook Hardware Control, which gives you the options to adjust the behaviour:  http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm

I'm sorry... you're saying that you want to use more energy than you need to?

The system will adjust the processor frequency as needed to run whatever game you're playing. It's not going to run at 100mhz if the game needs 800mhz at that time.

And you're not going to pull any more fps out of the machine if you force the processor to run at full speed. The game will still only use what it absolutely needs. The rest of the energy that the processor is using to run at full speed is only going to go one place: the air, in the form of heat.

Thank you soooo much esquire! That was exactally what I was looking for! I know that it adjusts, but I like to have more control. Even when I am pluggen into AC it still runs at 500mhz. When I use photoshop I don't like waiting for my pictures to open while the CPU is stepping up to full power.

Thanks again,
Storm

Hahaa... we are talking about less than a second here - surely you can muster the patience for that :smileywink:

Sorry to wake this thread up after so long but my processory is stuck at 598MHz with SpeedStep disabled and set to run at at "max performance". I've read around and it seemed that the only way out was to apply a CPU microcode update but I'm already running the latest microcode so the update won't apply. Can't seem to find a downgrade/upgrade path either. I've got an Inspiron 6000 (@ 1.6GHz). I've also applied the latest BIOS (A09).

Any takers?

I have a 700m. Everytime I open up the system info. window it shows that I have an Intel M Processor at 2.00ghz, but below it shows that it's running at 598 mhz. Even if I open up a game it stays the same or sometimes goes down to the 100-300 mhz range. Is there a program like quickstep for the 700m that would allow me to create a gaming power profile?

Thanks much,

Recently I encountered a similar problem on one of my laptops where my 1.6 GHz processor would go down to as low as 191 MHz whenever I increased the load on the processor (exactly the opposite of what it should be doing, I thought).  It turns out that there was a bit of dust accumulation in my laptop leading to cooling problems which were precipitated in overheating of the CPU. And the way this overheating is relieved when the fan speed is at max and the cooling is not sufficient is that speedstep steps the processor way down in an attempt to cool down the processor.  Solution (at least it worked for me):  Open up as many of removable panels on the bottom of the laptop as possible, and blow out all the dust accumulated inside.  You can use a can of compressed air or just blow hard with your mouth (but be careful if you do the latter not to inhale the dust that flies out).  See if this works, otherwise I am out of ideas.

Thanks Balaji.

I think you might be right there. When you mentioned the fan I realised that I haven't heard it in a while :) So it could be obstructed and the CPU would then be compensating by running at a lower clock speed.

I've only just arrived in Australia so I'm waiting for the rest of my computer gear/tools to arrive later this week and then I should be able to open it up and clear out anything that might be there. Of course, there's a possibility that the fan is faulty ...

But, again, thanks Balaji.

You are welcome, and good luck.  Please do keep us posted as to whether you got the problem resolved and how.

I'm back. Still waiting for my stuff to arrive so I went out and bought some screw drivers. I'm sitting here covered in sand. I won't be taking the laptop to the beach again!.

It looks like you're right Balaji. I opened the laptop up and pushed the fan around a few times before blowing it to make sure it was free to rotate. The CPU is now running back at 1.6GHz.

Now let me see if I can do the same with my broadband connection ...

I am glad you got the CPU speed problem fixed.  Good luck with your broadband speed!  :smileyvery-happy:

This is my first forum entry and want to say a big thank you to all the contributors to this thread.

I have had problems with my Inspiron 9400, running hot at 100%, for almost a week. i've tried everything. I eventually came across this page and  followed the guidelines to clean/blow out the right hand fan.

It now seems to be running perfectly - so a big thank you!!!
