SMART Status Test Failed
Just got a new Studio 14z and for yuks, thought I'd run the Dell PC Checkup Tool.
It reports that the SMART Status scan failed with the message "StatusUndefined - The SMART status information indicates status code 000h".
I checked the BIOS, and there is no option in there to do with SMART at all. I tried another tool which also cannot see any SMART information from the drive.
The drive seems to be working okay. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Thanks, but the 14z is a Core 2 Duo P8600 laptop (not netbook) with a 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA drive (not a SSD). As you say, it ain't broke, but I was just curious as to why the system doesn't seem to be reporting SMART data from the drive to both the Dell utility and another utility that I tried.

The pc checkup probably doesn't recognize netbooks or solid state drives. That's an old program that is not used much now. If it ain't broke.....

SMART is independent of interface type.
What's the harddisk type?
Disk manufacturer usually has a diagnostic tool for the drive.

Downloaded and installed the trial version of Drivesitter. As far as it's concerned, I don't even have a hard drive. It simply reports "No IDE drive could be successfully opened". I had previously tried Speedfan and Spinrite and neither of these could see the drive's SMART data either.
It is a SATA drive (not IDE). Maybe SATA doesn't support SMART???

Hi, have you "fixed" your problem yet? I have the same laptop (Studio 14z); I just got it a few days ago, run the diagnostic tool and got the same urgent message that my SMART status failed. =(

No, I haven't. The machine seems to be working fine, and I can't seem to get a definitive answer one way or the other, so I've given up for now. In my poking around, there seems to be some debate as to whether the type of drives used in these machines are even SMART-capable in the first place. There is no BIOS option to turn SMART on or off, so I don't know what else to do. I did try a couple of other disk utilities, and they couldn't get any SMART data from the system either.

Socket370... a year later.. did you ever find a solution... kinda running into that problem with a new Inspiron 2305 here.. everything works good, just irks me that the PC Checkup says SMART Status Test is Indeterminate.. almost doesn't even run the test, kinda skips over it almost... it does pass the SMART Threshold Test though... anyway.. just wondering if you've found out something over the last year...
Thanks
