SSD Drive Encryption - Dell Data Encryption or BitLocker
Hi,
I want to secure my SSD hard drive via full drive encryption on my Dell Latitude E6420.
Currently I have two options - Dell Data Encryption and Windows 7 BitLocker.
Which one should I choose - regarding safety and performance?
How does Dells Data Encryption work? Is it using the SSD hardware encryption or is it software-based? What about the TRIM operations of SSDs?
THX

They are both software-based solutions. The details are here:

The one thing you absolutely, positively MUST implement with ANY drive encryption scheme is a good, reliable backup schema. You WILL need it at some point.

Thank you very much!
It's stated "To minimize impact on PC performance and end-user productivity, the Dell Laptop Data Encryption service only encrypts data files and leaves application, OS and other files residing on the hard drive of a PC alone."
So, Dell Laptop Data Encryption is not even a full disk encryption. Therefore I will probably have to go with BitLocker.
I hoped Dell is using the SSD hardware encryption some manufactures like Samsung provide with their business SSDs. This is supposed to reduce performance issues with SSDs since TRIM, compression and other features are currently not working on full (software) encrypted SSDs. Users reports heavily reduced performance on for example Sandforce controlled SSDs.
By the way, what is the Dell HDD Protection doing (if not encrpyting) during boot-up of my Latitude?

The hard drive protection is usually just a password - the data on the disc is not encrypted (though it makes it very difficult -- not impossible - for anyone to get access to your data, the password CAN be removed from the drive by a company with the right combination of hardware and software tools).
