I got the same error with a brand new Dell e520n system. The system comes no OS installed on it. I tried to install the Windows XP into the system, and the Windows setup screen comes out fine, and loaded all the needed files from the external USB CDROM drive into the system. When the setup program tried to start the Windows OS, I got the blue screen with "Stop error" with code: 0x0000007B. I run the hard disk diagnosing tool, it reports the drive 0 "Pass".

I tried the FDISK c: command in the freeDOS CD (comes with the system), and re-intall the OS, same error.

I tried the format c: comand, and re-install the OS, no luck.

What's the source the problem. I read the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103/en-us, it seems many things can cause this problem.

I called Dell tech support(in India), those guys could not figure out the source of the problem, at the end, he said it is not Dell's problem, since the hard disk diagnosing result is "Pass". I decided to return the system, the customer services lady (also in India) said: "OK, but we have to charge you 15% re-stocking fee, plus the shipping charges.

Now I spent close to $1000 and have a broken Dell box sitting in my garage, don't know what to do.

I can spend another $100 to get a new drive to try, but if it is the Dell system's disk controller's problem, then I will waste the 100 dollars.

If I return the system, I also lost 100 dollars due to re-stocking fee and shipping fee.

I really do not expect DELL's machine and services are this BAD! I should have bought a Lenovo computer!

Any idea I can fix or get rid of this dispointed system?

I had the same issue trying to install Windows on my 520n

You have to go into the bios and change the Raid function to RAID Autodetect/ATA instead of RAID

then I used Killdisk which is free to write 1's and 0's to the drive then I booted off my xp and I was golden.

If you keep getting a blue screen of death when trying to boot the Windows OS CD/DVD and you are sure that your computer and the drives are working, enabled and connected, then this may be your problem.

1. On start up (Dell logo), press F2 to enter BIOS

2. Expand the "Drives" section

3. Go to "SATA Operation"

4. Change this from "RAID Auto/AHCI" to "RAID Auto/ATA"
