Studio 15 screen flicker

I just ordered a new Dell Studio 15 fired it up and the screen is flickering up and down and I cannot even get to the point to install Vista.  Has anyone had this happen and if so what was your solution.  I literally opened the package 5 mintues ago.

My new Studio 15 1555 arrived last Wednesday and am having a flickering screen issue, too.

It's as if the wallpaper image is warping almost, more of a pulsing effect.  It's not noticeable when brightness is turned all the way up, but the lower the brightness gets, the worse the pulsing gets.

Plus, there's a low buzz coming from underneath the keyboard, as if the hard drive or something is constantly spinning at top speed -- but I don't know that that is the cause.  It sounds like a Lionel toy train's electric transformer box when I hold my ear close to it.  The keyboard gets really warm, too.

I didn't have any of these problems with my old Dell E1505.

Do I have a bad unit?  Is there a fix otherwise (I tried playing with power settings, but with no effect.)  Or is this normal?

If it helps, I've got the entry-level 15.6 High Definition 720p screen and the standard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD.

hum, for some reason the reply I made yesterday has been deleted...

anyway, I have the exact same problems. Flickering on the whole right side of the screen, more important in the corners. I saw it the first time I ever powered my laptop, 3 weeks ago. I sent it for repairs and receive my laptop with a new LCD screen+ cables (well, that's what was written on the paper). Same problem. Just like if they never changed it. So I have 3 theories:

1- I got really unlucky and they installed a faulty LCD screen again, and the tech is blind cause it's written that they tested it!?!?

2- They never changed it...

3- The problem is elsewhere in the laptop. The power button is near the problem, so probably that the DC power wires are placed there and maybe along the right side of the screen to power the webcam, mics, etc... If the power is noisy, that could produce this.

For me, the easiest way to notice the problem is in the Vista Welcome screen, where you can chose the user to login. Also, it looks like it is more important when the laptop (or just the screen?) has been powered off for some time.

We should keep this thread alive, cause it's really annoying.

EDIT: I forgot. I have the 1080p screen, with the 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 video card.

Well that sounds like a bad unit to me. I can't believe Dell let it get out of the shop without testing it.  I hope you can exchange it.

My problem's different -- the entire screen kind of pulsates as if there is a wave current rolling from bottom to top, but nothing localized on any one area of the screen.

And it turns out that it is in fact a bad computer.  Even though I'm still within the 21 day return period, I decided to let a Dell technician come by yesterday to look at it and he confirmed that there's a problem --either the motherboard or the screen itself.  So I'm obliged to exchange it -- I figure it's a fool's game to do such major surgery on a one week old computer.  Better to let Dell patch it up and sell it in their outlet.

Too bad, I really like this little critter.  FWIW, I'm going to have it replaced exactly, but I'm hoping I can get Dell to let me swap in a colored top.  The Chainlink Black that comes standard is a nasty fingerprint magnet.

Wow.  I hope this isn't a systemic problem with the new 1555's.  DownyT above went top of the line with the screen and video card whereas I ordered the cheapest options.

(and if you're around Downy, how does the internet display look on the 1080p screen?  I once looked into a Studio 15 1535 with a 'spensive 1620x something resolution and it made reading CNN and so forth impossible -- the text was tiny.  Tweaking the resolution made things larger but fuzzy, thus my cheapo act with this 1555 -- which is terrific if it weren't for the flickering/pulsating.)

I have the same problem, it looks like very quick hoizontal waves on my screen. My Studio 1555 just arrived last week, and apart from the screen thing i love the laptop. Mine has the 720p LGD7001 display and a Radeon 4570 graphics card. Has anyone found a fix yet? Or contacted Dell? What did they say?

I recieved my studio 1555 less than a month ago and am having the same flickering issues as everyone else. It is actually rather annoying and starting to bug me more and more every day. Has anyone had any luck contacting dell about this issue? I'm stressed because I don't want to have to send it out for repairs. I leave for school in less than a month and god only knows how long the repairs will take.

I received my Studio 1555 15 days back and of late I have started to notice flickering on the screen as soon as the brightness is set to a low level. The flickering doesn't concentrate on a specific part but its like a wave moving from top to bottom of the screen. Its very annoying to see it specially if you have dark colored background. Can anyone tell is it faulty hardware or some problem with the software. Please help as I don't want to send my laptop to the workshop so early and if this is a hardware fault then I can get my whole laptop shipped back to dell.

You all are describing the exact problem I have with my new 1555.

Yes, I did call Dell, they sent out an in-home technician to look at it, he confirmed that there is a problem, either with the motherboard or the screen, and fortunately I'm within the 21 day return period so Dell will exchange it or refund.

Daggone it.  I'm now suspecting that this is a problem with the entire line of 1555's.

I geuss i should call them too, if they are replacing them.

That's a good idea.

Does anyone with this problem have one of the 5400rpm harddrives?

I ordered the 250GB/7200rpm harddrive and although I can't prove it, I suspect it's the culprit.

Otherwise, this is a terrific computer.  Were it not for the pulsating screen, I'd be over the moon.

I'll check back in when the exchange 1555 arrives.

Hmm, i also have the 250gb 5400 RPM drive, but how could that mess with the screen?

Also my display is the LGD7001, what about the rest of you?

I think it's a power supply issue.  There's something going on inside the computer that's making the harddrvive work too hard and somehow interferes with the power going to the screen.

I once took a simple digital alarm clock with me when I moved to London for a summer.  The clock went bonkers and sped up.

It was a US current vs. British current issue.

I suspect the same issue here.  This poor thing doesn't have its transformers set properly.

How do you tell which screen is onboard?

(BTW, I'm now looking at an XPS 16.)

I feel that LGD7001 line of LCD displays are plagued with this flickering problem. I am returning my studio to DELL as soon as possible.

To check what display you have, right click on Computer in the start menu and go to properties. Click on device manager in the left plane. Then just go to Monitors, right click on the generic PNP monitor, go to properties, and under the Details tab go to Hardware ID's.

I think its the LGD7001 that is the display at issue.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Yikes, that sounds like you've got an uber-serious problem.  The issue we're yapping about in here is more of an annoyance -- the computer works fine, but the display flickers.

The quicker you call Dell the better off you'll be.  They'll likely ship you an exact replacement -- easy as it can be.

On the monitor ID, thanks.  Quite the rabbit hole of information through that path.

Mine reads "MONITOR\AUO20EC" -- I guess that's different from these LGD's?

Anyhow, I've decided to return this 1555 and order an XPS 16, which I hadn't considered when first ordering a few weeks ago.  I really do love this 1555 though; if it hadn't been for the pulsing screen, it'd be a perfect little computer for the price.
