Touchpad Automatically Disabled

I own a Dell XPS L502x.  For the past couple of months, if I reboot or close the laptop lid, the touchpad is automatically disabled and I have to enable it to use it again.  It never used to do this.  Is there a way to shut off or 'disable' this automatic disabling action?

Hi timothyaharris,

I would suggest you to update the touchpad drivers on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below and click on ‘Get drivers and downloads’ then download the touchpad driver from ‘Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices’ section onto the system and install it.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Ravi.

Thank you for the recommendation.  I did update the touchpad driver and I have rebooted twice.  Each time, I can use the touchpad to select my user login, but during the second part of the boot up process, the touchpad is disabled, so it doesn't look like the updated driver solved the problem.

Regards,

Tim

Hi timothyaharris,

Sorry for the delayed response. The Dell quickset application needs to be installed for the hot keys to work. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the Dell Quickset application from Application section onto the system and install it.

Hi Ravi,

As always, thanks for the response.  I am not completely understanding your point: I am mostly a novice but if I do understand it correctly, my hot keys do work.  I can push the "gear" icon and it opens up the "Windows Mobility Center" that allows me to turn the touchpad back on.

But I still have my original problem, the updated touchpad driver did not solve my problem.  And a new problem: trying to perform the "Run Quick Test" check, I get stuck during the "Installing My Dell" step and it cannot install -- it gets stuck during the "extract: patch_inner_dsc_642214to642622_....exe".  I've rebooted and tried this 3-4 times.  Any thoughts?

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Sorry for the delayed response. I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the touchpad driver and update BIOS for issue resolution. Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the touchpad.

  1. Click on Start button.

  2. In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.

  3. Select the Mice and other pointing devices listed and right click on touchpad.

  4. Now select properties.

  5. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.

  6. Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”

  7. You want to delete the driver click OK.

After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below and click on ‘Get drivers and downloads’ then download the BIOS from BIOS section and the touchpad driver from ‘Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices’ section onto the system and install it.
