TouchPad Won't work anymore after new Keyboard install

I just bought a replacement kepboard for my laptop and am having a huge problem installing it. After I install the new keyboard and start the computer, the keyboard works fine, however, the mouse pad does not. The cursor stays frozen on the screen. It worked fine before i installed the new keyboard. I connected the cable from the keyboard to the laptop but there is a copper metal piece that hangs down from underneath the mouse touchpad. Is that copper piece suppose to slide into something or touch something particular? It seems like that is why the mouse pad isnt working. Am I correct? I hope you can help. I have been trying to figure this out for hours now without any luck.
Thank You

Chris
