USB problems

I am having problems with an Inspiron 1100. I have re installed the windows XP operating system and now it seems I have a problem with the USB ports.

If I plug anything into either of the 2 ports  it is not recognised or rather nothing happens.

When I check the device manager, under the USB controllers it shows the following

Intel r 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced host controller - 24CD
Intel r 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host controller  -24C2
Intel r 82801DB/DBM USB Unuversal Host controller -24C4
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

If I highlight the first enhanced host controller and select properties it shows as no drvers installed for this device.... The others all show as working ok

When I ran a full diagnostic check, no problems were shown.

Its clear something is missing and I would appreciate any help in oorder to rectify this problem

Many thanks

Mike

have you tried installing the chipset drivers?

Hi

According to the diagnostic disc the chipset drivers were all present. However, in view of your advice I re installed them by overwriting.

The problem still exists. The device manager still shows three controllers as opposed to 2 root hubs and that no drivers are instaed or the enhanced Host controller

I struck the same probs when trying to fix a friend's 700m when Xp got totally trashed.  I did total clean re-install but it seems most drivers did not re-install not just the USB ones.  Where can i get the correct drivers?  I used her original Dell disk.  Gimme HP machines anyday!!!!!

have you insstalled service pack 2?

Yes, the Service pack 2 was installed directly after completing the re installation of XP.
If I can take the matter further.

I am unable to connect a printer to the laptop...again because the USB do not recognise the connection.
I have tried connection both via the windows wizard AND the printer software.....both to no effect.

As a point of note. When I connect the wireless USB connector to either of the laptop ports, the light on the Wireless flashes once then goes out....which would suggest there is an initial "connection" albeit extremely brief.

It strikes me the problem lies with the USB enhancement controller not having suitable drivers. Surely these are automatically re installed during the installation process....and failing that, there must be a way of re installing them seperately?

Try installing the Dell Notebook System Software. This is for XP and 2000.

Notebook System Software (NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy drives, Intel Pentium-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR) communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration

Thanks for answer.  I found out it is known problem caused by XP SP2.  Followed instructions given in MS Knowledgebase and fixed it already.  Friend does not have driver disk that should have been supplied with PC.  This is 1st time I have ever seen an OEM Windows that does not supply appropriate drivers on the Windows disk itself.

Many thanks Jimmy P for the advice

However, after downloading the suggested file, when I tried to extract I got as far as Setup.exe at which point a window opened to inform me "This computer does not support this operating system"

The laptop runs Windows XP home edition version 2002 and always has.

Any help would be much appreciated

Regards

Update

I have now managed to instal the suggested Dell Drivers but the story remains the same. If I check in the device manager the Enhanced host controller is still showing as no drivers installed for this device and there still appears to be just the 2 USB root hubs displayed.

Do you have XP SP2 installed?  If you do then it is a problem with that.  Try to manually install the drivers then upgrade the driver and tell it to go look on the SP2 disc.  That is what fixed mine.
