Just a thought... have you tried downloading and installing a new driver for your touchpad?

Question. Does it do this only with the touchpad, or does it do it with an external mouse as well?

Yes it is just the touchpad. I do not use a mouse with this PC.

I wish I knew more so I could help you! I know how frustrating these stinky computers are! You love 'em and hate 'em!

I think if it were me, I would go ahead and try it with an external mouse or a trackball to see if the problem occurs in that mode as well.

Another thing I'd try would be a system restore, if you can take it back to the way it was before this started happening...?

Its a hardware problem, mine has recently exhibited similar problems, unfortunately it only seems to get worse.

The only bright side is this is kind of a spare that was not used very much when new but, is used by multiple users now. So if it tanks all together it is not be a big monetary loss of equipment. It would still be nice to get somemore mileage since the odometer still does not show it broken in yet.

I have tried it with a mouse with no problem. But I use this wireless & away from places it would not be practical to use a mouse or other device.

Put me in this forum.  I have the same problem/condition.  Inspiron 8200.

I have a touchpad and joystick along with Dell's external mouse.  I have gone thru all of Dell's troubleshooting trees to no avail.  I have downloaded all their updated drivers, etc.

Since I too use this as a backup computer, I thought, what the heck, I will reformat the entire computer and try that.  Still no help. 

At this point, I believe that the problem has to be hardware related.

Sorry I can't give you a solution at this point.  When I do find the fix, I will post it here.

I just found this note/article that appears to have fixed my problem.

It seems that maybe the touchpad is shorting out.  I went into the bios and followed the instructions about disabling the pointing stick and touch pad.  Now I only have control with my external mouse.  However, it seems to be working.

dell support has helped me several times with this problem, but I can not remember process.  dell had me open 'my computer' then I draw a blank.  Anyone fill in the blanks for me?
