webpc modem question
I know there is a lot of posts about phone modems for webpc. This is what i found. My web pc wont work with windows xp either.I called dell, first i was told to get a v.92 modem.I read threads/posts on forum, and found part# from NT loser wich was the best info on forum. So i called dell again (the webpc tech line) ,and was told there is no longer modem parts available. (a fella named john). My question is will a modem from my local circuit city/computer store work.

You may be able to get it working with these drivers although most can't

see here for more instructions

You can use most any external USB modem with the web PC but I would use that mini pci slot.. ( I doubt anybody working at circuit city or best buy type places would know what a mini pci card is. I doubt they carry any MINI PCI products period)
Dell should still sell mini pci modems for their laptops. Sounds like you may be running into ill-informed representatives.
Please call Dell and try talking with thier used and refurbished parts department (for the combo card).
If you can't get it at Dell... check out EBAY ....
I finally took RH of my web pc and am now runnning my FTP server using a Windows based solution. Serv-U FTP, there are many more options. Linux is way over-rated especially if you are just running a small server. BTW.. the tiny IDE HDD cable is no longer working so until I can find one small enough to fit back in the mini case, this is what my web pc looks like now.

That is a good idea.. a whole new computer would be better. The web pc I have is just a spare that was given to me. I am curious as to why the other modem didn't work? Was it external .. was it mini pci?

The modem from the local computer store didn't work.I've spent to much time, and it's been agravateing to try to install xp.I'm done trying.A computer thats 4 years old ain't worth my effort(so i've came to find out).Tearing computers apart, and working on them just ain't my hobby.Maybee as i get more experience working with computers, i'll change my mind.Good luck to those who keep trying to install xp on a webpc! By the way i got xp from my mom after it didn't work on her computer for free so that's why i tried it.

It was external w/usb connection. I called bellsouth & we tried several different things& ended up w/error 777 everytime. They sugested the computer repair center. Circuit city employees don't know what mini pc modem is. THIS SITE NEEDS A CHAT ROOM!

Yeah that 777 error definitely points to problem modem.
Have you tried contacting replacement parts again and getting the internal MINI PCI ...NIC/MODEM combo? I know they told you they didn't carry them but I was told the same thing a few months before I was able to successfully order the replacement.
I know you are frustrated with the web pc but it seems that the external modem you purchased may have gone bad.
