XPS 13 9360 Windows 10 random hangs and cursor lags

Hi all,

I have the XPS 13 9360 model with the Core i5 7200U CPU. I really like the laptop but I face the following problem. In Windows 10 home edition, it suffers from quite frequent random freezes and hangs.

This happens mostly during browsing (I am using Chrome Browser), but less frequently on other programs such as Skype. During the hang the cursor lags and the whole system becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. It is like running a really slow computer. I have also noticed that if it keeps on for more than a couple of seconds, there is also a hardware delay... For example while hang the Caps Lock key isn't event immediately responsive to turning on and off...

I am using Bios version 1.3.2, do not have anything extra installed (except for the default provided McAfee) and have a Dual Boot Setup also running Linux Mint 18.1 Please note that in Linux I have no such problem! This happens in Windows and mostly during chrome browsing...

Anyone else also facing this?

Thanks

:emotion-2:

Since this problem happen mostly in Chrome browser and windows, I'd suggest resetting Chrome browser and see if that will make a difference.

I understand that you focus on Chrome because I told you that it mostly happens while using it. But it also happens with other programs while chrome is closed. So it has to be something deeper, such as wireless network traffic (drivers) that I saw in other posts... But I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling without effect unfortunately

I'd suggest you disable McAfee in your Startup(Task Manager) or get rid of it and settle for Windows Defender. I also suggest you disable any Chrome add-ons, external drive or any unnecessary programs running at startup.

A power surge could cause problems with the wireless network, I'd suggest powering off system, remove all the external peripherals (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer and then remove the AC adapter. If system is connected to a Router/ Modem then turn off as well. Please wait about 15 minutes, turn on Router/Modem, replace adapter, and then power on system. Hopefully windows runs without any problems,

If the computer still freezing, hangs or running slow, use the Processes tab in Task Manager to identify which programs are consuming more memory, disk and network in real time. Please watch Dell video below:

By the way, keep an eye out for either CPU, Memory and Disk being 100% in task manager.

Lastly

a) Disable some of the unnecessary Apps running in the background. Please type Settings onto search box,  click 'Privacy' and then Background Apps.

b)  Run Troubleshooting tools on system.Type Troubleshooting Control Panel onto [Cortana] search box, click 'View All', and the Windows Store Apps. Run Network Adapter, System Maintenance, and Windows Updates as well.

c)  Download free version of CCleaner - Official Site and then run it. Or run Disk cleanup tool on the system Either one of them will cleanup all the junk that could be causing all the problem on the system.

d) Download the free version Malwarebytes and then run it. It's the best for getting rid of nasty malwares that cause a lot of problems on computers..

e) Reset Network - Settings>>> Network & Internet>.> Stoll down to bottom of page>>. Reset Network

f) Reset windows 10 - Settings>>>Update & Security>>> Recovery>>>Reset This PC

Run the 'Guide Me' option in your Dell Product Support page. It will automatically detect driver updates for your system. Please follow instructions to run Guide Me option in the link below:

I have tried all of the above, although not all really relevant....

After observation these hangs also take place with Edge, so not a Chrome issue....

Also during the hangs there are no spikes in any hardware usage ( I have the task manager open and no spikes in resource charts). It is like the whole system pauses... Also tried restoring the factory image downloaded from the dell drivers. Same result...

I am also having similar problems with an XPS12 9Q33 - constant hangs and freezes in Windows 10.  Mine hangs/freezes sporadically in any program, but every time I try and run a Windows Defender scan.  Does yours hang when you scan?  Just trying to find some commonality in our problem.  I did a reinstall of Windows 10, updated BIOS, did Chk Disk, tried using Task Manager but it runs fine when using TM.  When it hangs I can't access TM or any of the data.

Perform a diagnostic at boot up by pressing F12 twice just after turning the laptop on.  Run the diagnostic - I'm pretty sure it will show that your hard drive is bad.  You can also do a system diagnostic running Dell's diagnostics from their web page, and it will probably show the same thing - bad hard drive.

@jonmochi I can successfully complete a Windows Defender scan without freezes. I cannot seem to reproducde the freezes in a controlled manner. I don't know why or when they happen.

Also completed the Diagnostics without any problem... If it was a disk problem, I would also face it in Linux where I previously said, there is no problem at all..

I have also noticed, that disabling Connected Standby feature of Windows 10 and setting the power profile to performance, reduces (but not completely eliminates) the problem. It has to be something driver - low level related, since it affects the computer hardware itself (The led on the caps lock key isn't even responsive) and it happens only on Windows and not Linux...

This should be resolved no matter what, because one of the reasons I bought the XPS 13 and not the 15 with better performance, was its power efficiency... If you cannot use that (in expense of a smaller performance), then what's the point....

Sorry I didn't catch that your Linux is running fine.  I don't suppose you've tried doing a clean install of Windows 10 did you?

Good luck - your symptoms sounded so much like mine, which are now cured since I replaced my hard drive.

@shoffmeister This is exactly my point. That's why I was insisting at low lever (driver) problem.... And as you say, the laptop can normally run really smooth, and I can tell because these freezes are not performance relevant...

However I have reinstalled all the drivers from the support page from the start and even installed from scratch the Dell Factory Image... but with the same result...

If Linux was not working perfectly, I would be sure of a hardware problem...

Unfortunately maybe it is time to take this to dell support...
