XPS 1640 overheating

Hi, I just bought this machine and figured I'd run Win7 on it, so I removed Vista and installed it.

I booted win7, found out that it by default had found all the hardware, more or less, even the correct gfx driver for my card so I installed a game (EVE Online) to test performance.

After running EVE at 1920x1080 fullscreen with stuff pretty much at high I start to notice a framerate issue which for some reason seems to be degrading.

About 5-10 minutes after starting EVE the computer freezes in a spectacular way, half the screen goes white, sort of, and the system becomes unresponsive.

I figure that I hard reboot is in order, so I do that. After booting back up I check settings, and decide that I should try the latest ATi driver from their website so I install that.

Back in EVE, 4-5 minutes in I start noticing those same framerate issues and start lowering the gfx settings and resolution of the game etc to see if that helps.

After having put the game in window-mode 1024-768px and with every gfx setting on low I see that my avg. FPS is about 20-30 and the machine is still running very hot.

I exit the game, go over to my support page with drivers etc on dell.com and download all the necessary drivers I could find to help solve this problem.

The ONE driver that I could not install on my system is the one I might be needing the most tho, I don't recall what it was called atm. but by the description it looked rather important, the reason I couldn't install it was compatibility issues with 64bit OS's.

Can someone please help me figure this one out? I don't if the fans have to run at max speed to keep the pc cool enough, but please don't tell me that this is all I'm going to get out of this laptop.

If that is the case, I might have to reconsider the purchase and return the product to dell and ask for a refund.

I totally feel your pain.  I have the exact same issue....Dell is on it's way out to replace the MoBo, and cooling devices for the 2nd time.  One thing I did discover...if you undervolt the Processor, it seems to help out a lot.  I undervolted it, and ran STO for almost two hours and the temp of the system never got above 60C.  There is no way that I have found to manipulate the fan speed properly, but the undervolting seems to work well, without sacrificing processing power.

It's going to be fairly difficult to disentangle things.

First, if you're looking for a high-performance gaming system, this is not it - it's a mid-range multimedia system.  If that's what you want you'd be better off with an Alienware M17x system.

It sounds like you couldn't install the advanced power management, which COULD well be the source of the problem.  If so, you can either wait for full Windows 7 support (the OS hasn't been officially released yet and won't be for another three weeks), or return the system -- but if you choose that, bear in mind you'll pay a 15% restock charge plus two-way shipping.

ive had the same problem with GTA IV  , solved my problem by giving my  videocard more space to cool air . On the downside of the laptop theres a videcard cooler fan and if its being blocked or there is not enough space it will overheat.

Also try the modded ati drivers (guess youve got an ati radeon 4670 -1gb- too?)

im an owner of a 1640 xps too.

Btw thats not all you can get out of the studio xps 1640, it should be running like hell , and the most heavy games should run smooth on your laptop.
