XPS M1330 recurring USB driver problems
Hi all,
I am having a very annoying recurring problem with the USB drivers on my xps m1330 running Vista 64.
Each time I boot, none of my USB devices work, and in device manager I see at least three "Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller 283x" (where x is 0 - 5) with an exclamation mark next to them, with the following error message in Device Status:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Windows did not start a related device driver. To learn more, click the Driver tab and then click Driver Details.
I get the same for two "Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 283x" (where x = 6 - A) devices.
I also only see one "Generic USB Hub" device and one "USB Root Hub" device.
If I right-click and unistall each of these devices, and then run "scan for hardware changes" an additional six "USB Root Hub"s are detected and installed, along with the previously faulty Host Controllers (described above), and then a whole bunch of specific drivers for my USB devices are installed, and all my devices work fine.
However, each time I reboot I go back to square one. So I have to manually uninstall and scan for new hardware each time I boot. My driver settings do not seem to "stick." I have run the diagnostics and there are no errors with the USB ports according to that. The fact that the devices all work (once I go through this uninstall and scan process) suggests it's a software thing, right?
I have been on to Dell support for several hours and they reinstalled the chipset drivers and the Dell System Software, but to no avail. They now want me to do a resintally of Vista, but this is obviously a major headache I would rather avoid.
Has anyone else encountered anything like this / have any suggestions?
Many thanks
Seth

Hi Seth,
I am experiencing exactly the same problem on a new Studio XPS running Vista-64: on start-up the driver cannot be started on most USB ports. The card readers built into the PC are also not showing up (must be USB devices).
Even with the deinstallation/re-installation through the Device Manager I rarely get everything going.
Interestingly, the USB mouse and keyboard always work from the start and I thus wonder whether the problem might be related to their drivers. I first wanted to try a different keyboard & mouse to see if this changes the situation before contacting DELL.
Have you got anywhere with DELL? I DELL are not familiar with the problem (and apart from your description, I have not seen any other cases on the www either), it may not be that common. Maybe something is similar between our installations and it's worth comparing? I am running a "Dell Multimedia USB Dual Tone" keyboard and a "Logitech MX Revolution mouse". I also had the usb hub of a HP LP2475w plugged in before I noticed the problem. Any similarities?
Good luck!
Eiko.

Guys,
I seem to be having the same problem. My USB Logitech mouse works. However, my USB stick and USB portable drive does not wok. There seems to be power going to the devices, but it doesn't register with windows. I haven't tried the devices on another computer yet. Will do that. Have you guys figured out what the problem is? Thanks.

Seth,
If you reinstalled the operating system, the Notebook/Desktop Utility(if applicable) and the chipset drivers need installed first for the USB Ports to work.
Try this fix and see if it works.
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
