XPS M1530 Virtual (VT) Setting in BIOS

XPS 1530 A07

T7500 Core 2 DUO Proc

4 GB Ram

160 GB 7200 rpm HD

Vista Ultimate x64

-----------------------

I am trying to figure out why I Dell hasn't provided the capability to turn on Virtualization in the BIOS.  I checked the Intel site and know for a fact that my processor is capable of running VT.  My coworker has an older XPS 1330 and has the setting available to him in his BIOS (though ia m not sure of the rev).  I have googled for a solution but have come up short thus far.  The one response I did find from a Dell rep basically gave a talk off saying that processors have can vary from machine to machine.  I know for a fact that may processor is capable of running VT and am just waiting for Dell to deliver a BIOS version that will allow me to invoke it.  I am running VMWare Workstation 6.02 and would like to take advantage of running 64-bit hosts.  Anybody have an idea on what Dell is planning on doing?

This forum is for user to user communication-you might want to contact Dell directly.

I'm assuming that we're not going to get any answer here.  The thread looks dead.

All

This feature will be added in a bios release, as soon as I get a bios rev and date I will post it.

I received an email from XPS Support stating that they are working on the problem but have no timeline.  I tried to include there response, but it was censored (though I am still unclear as to why).  Anyway, looks like I am stuck with 1530 since I am past my 21 days.

Just got my XPS1530.

Very very very sad VT can't be activated.

Hardware Virtualization is mandatory to use Windows 2008 new virtualization technology...

So for now this laptop is pretty useless to me... I will have to send it back if new BIOS isn't posted really soon !

Please dell make it fast !!!

You're running a server OS on a laptop?

you will not be able to click on the link because Dell does not seem to like url's in the forum.  anyway if you take out the spaces between http:[space]//[space]blogs.msdn... you should be good to go.

Some people do that for various reasons, they travel and sell server apps, developers, all kinds of legit reasons.

Read the above blog.  Running on server on a laptop is nothing new; unitl VMWare really took off and stabalized I ran server all the time on my laptop.  Though it is true that you need VT (the abllity to turn it on) to use 2008 Hyper V, it is also necessary for VMWare Workstation 6.0x.  If it is not enabled you cannot run VMWare Workstation in 64bit mode nore can you run 64bit guest operating systems.  Hence my frustration.

Links work fine here. An update, I just check on this and we are waiting on the bios team to give a date for the bios release, hopefully I will know something in the next couple of days.

Good news!   BIOS Version A08 has the Virtual (VT) option.  I have enabled it and it works great.  Now running Vista x64 Ultimate on my 32 bit Vista Ultimate using VMWare 6.0.2.

To enable VT, F2 to enter BIOS and select Post Behavior->Virtualization and select enable.

Dell, thanks for the update.

Glad to hear it, this release caught me by surprise, I've been in meetings and other time consuming stuff so had not had the chance to check on it.
