D400 vs X300

Hi All,

Need the opinion on the subject - prons and cons for each laptop.
So far I found X300 is more attractive (because of the weight) with a few flaws (such as squeaking) whereas D400 seems to be a better-engineered laptop (no as much complaints as re: X300).

Pavel.

I tried both the D400 and X300.  Considering that the base model of the D400 is only $100 less than the X300... I would take the X300.  It is more stylish, lighter and smaller and just a tad bit slower (1.2Ghz vs. 1.3Ghz).

As for the squeaking, morse-code noise coming out of the X300, someone suggested a fix that I just tried it a few minutes ago, and presto... it works!!! My X300 is now as quiet as a mouse.

Just follow these instructions:

Left click My Computer | Hardware | Device Manager

Then expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and right click on the first USB Root Hub and select Properties, then under Power Management, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Just doing this to ONE USB Root Hub got rid of the noise for my X300.

If you want the option of a faster processor, then the D400 is the way to go.

Thank you for the response - much appreciated.

Processor power is not that important - weight, size, battery life are the decisive factors. Will try your advise when got my X300 - hopefully will work.

I had very bad experience with Compaq Evo 620c - high pitching noise from the graphic fan, just could not stand it. Send laptop to HP. HP failed to repair laptop therefore I decided to get the money back and go for Dell.

Pavel.

Hi there. I have used both the D400 and the X300, and chose the X300 for myself. In my estimation, it is the superior machine, and loses to the D400 only in terms of the run time on the standard battery. It is significantly lighter and thinner, its screen is as good or better, its keyboard is more comfortable, its trackpad is as good, its performance, atleast as per CNET measurements, is as good, and its got a much more sophisticated feel to it.

The X300 just feels so much nicer to use! But its got short battery life. Mine runs a tick over 2 hours on the standard battery, and about 4.5 on the big battery. The D400 runs about 3.5 on its standard battery.

I've had my X300 for about a month now and I'm very happy with it. I've had no issues and I'd go along with its only weak-point being the battery life. If I had to nit-pick, I'd say the only criticism is a couple of the forest of stickers on the underside have been put on rather haphazardly and are catching/beginning to detach when I pick it up. No regrets over my choice though.

I own a D400, I believe it is a little bit heavier then the X300 (0.7 lb?). The big difference between the two I believe is the processor. Pentinum 3 vs Pentinum M/ Centrino. The battery life on D400 is good but its not good compare to otehr centrino laptop ( the centrino processor suppose to save battery life?).

I believe that you can "under-clock" the P3 processor to make your battery run longer.(speedstep)

Anyway, no complaints or rent about my D400, it been doing fine in every aspects

The Latitude D400 and the Latitude X300 BOTH use Pentium M / Centrino processors... The OLD Latitude X200 uses a Pentium 3.

i like the look of the x200 more than the x300.  i think that was the best looking notebook dell has released.  simple and clean.

I have an X200 (which I prefer to the X300 due to the better mediabase which includes both DVD drive and FDD) - and have just been given a brand new D400 to replace the LT which Dell's repair centre broke...

The X200 is sooo much nicer to use.  The touchpad on the D400 isn't as nice as that on the X200 or the LT (I just cannot get it set as I would like), the pointing stick and extra buttons are of no use to me.

Assuming that the X300 is as good as the X200, I'd say go for the X300 every time!
