erratic cursor

Question

my cursor gets very erratic and moves into the upper right hand corner of the moniter or the bottom left hand corner of the moniter and I can't control or get it to work right unless I hit mouse pad really hard or press on the upper right hand panal close to the right hinge. I had this problem in the past and also a broken right hinge, after I got the hinge replaced the cursor worked fine for a while now it is acting up again pretty frequently, anything I can do to fix this problem? I have a laptop inspiron 4100.

Hi,

The KBD is a common case of the trouble in your model. The pointer stick in it. If you load the latest drivers, you can disable it to confirm the fault. If you give it a tap when playing up it may stop it. A replacement KBD wont cost much.

We have had this issue with a lot of the D600's 400, and even the 620's at my job. I normally only notice it if my laptop is trying ot connect a wireless connection. Or if it see ones, and wants to connect to it. If I turn the wireless off, it doesn't go erratic. We have tried a number of things, and still were unable to resolve it. We don't have the problem with the default windows drivers. But without the alps drivers, you loose functionality. If you look on the inside of these machines, you will see that under the palm rest is the cable for the touch pad. It has been said that this gets pinched, and causes the issue. Sometimes it has to be replaced, for the really bad ones. Believe or not, before we brought the issue up to Dell, they had no idea of the issue. They thought we were crazy till an enginer seen it.
