try an external usb keyboard, does it work fine now?

if so just assume something is wrong with the keyboard. if you are under warranty ask Dell to send you a new part. Apparently it installs plug-and play.

I am having the similar problem with my keyboard. a and z are appearing as az, c and d as dc, f and v as fv, l as l., j and m as jm as so on...
I have Dell Inspiron 1200 and warranty has expired. Any cost effective solution anyone could suggest?

I've got exactly the same problem - the whole lower half of my Inspiron 1200 keyboard is doing this...  Any suggestions?

And I have also the same keyboard problem with my Inspiron 1200, and with warranty expired as well. It seems a general probelm with these laptops.  How can we make Dell start and investigation and a possible recall :-) ?

I had the exact same problem. The info in " Inspiron 2200 Keyboard Erratic" forum topic helped fix my problem:
After lifting up keyboard (very easy with the Dell online documentation) and reseating the keyboard cable, it was fine. Other people reported dusting out under the keyboard tray, but mine was clean - just needed the ribbon cable reseated.

Thanks a lot, it actually worked for me.
