Inspiron 6000 Battery Problem

I have been using my inspiron for more than one year. Suddenly the battery has stopped charging. Can Anyone advise in diagnosing the problem? Do I need a new battery?

Possibly, but a faulty AC adapter is another possibility - so is a faulty system board.

I keep seeing this same reply that the system board is bad and needs replacing. For the life on me I don't know how anyone can suggest something of this magnitude with never looking at it personally. It would be the same as telling a mechanic on the phone that you car has a noise and have him tell you it needs a new motor. Do yourself a favor and do a search for no a/c power on a dell laptop and you will see a lot of hits where you can send your laptop in and for around 150 to 200 they are replacing the power jack. My 2 cents.

Wow if I check all 12 of your posts are they going to be this same thing busmechanic?

Check ejn's posts and his level of contribution before making comments like this over and over again.

Also realize that more than one person HAS had this issue with the Inspiron 6000 and IT IS usually the motherboard Power Jack which makes both of you correct in a way.

Hey since we are judging, If I were to look at you laptop would I find a bunch of illegal downloads? Morphus Freak!

My suggestion you these problems are that you may not need an entire 500.00 motherboard a 150.00 repair to the power jack may solve the problem.

Do you replace an engine if a spark plug goes bad?

All,

I am stepping into this one before it goes any further. Please address the original question and not each other.

ejn63 suggested that it might be a faulty motherboard, which is entirely correct. He did not say in this post that the motherboard needed to be replaced.

Dell does not repair motherboards, but other companies do. If the system is still under warranty, then contact Technical Support. If the system is not under warranty, then a motherboard replacement is one option. A repair by a 3rd party is another option. Other forum users have been very forthcoming with suggestions on companies that will do repairs.

If you object to another user's suggestion, you should offer your own, politely. Posting a link to a company that will do the repair is a polite option. Telling other forum users how they should answer messages is not.

Thank you for helping our customers. Please keep it up.

I agree with everyone here...

What I find particularly annoying is the fact that power issues have been widely recognised by Dell computer owners for years and yet Dell (the company) choose not to comment. It takes a serious issue such as a battery catching fire (I.e. bad press and a near miss fatality) before they do anything. Poor form Dell.

I guess the old adage - you get what you pay for and quality costs.

Once my Inspiron 6000 fails for what-ever reason, I'm switching back to Toshiba.

Well to be honest the battery issue is Sony's fault.  They made bad batteries.

Dell had no control over that.  However the assembly of parts and the repairs made by "Dell" certified technicians certainly should fall within a special category

I really do thing hardware failures of this type should still be fixed by Dell in situations like mine where the laptop is barely out of warranty and the error was most likely caused by a bad tech.

However if it's a case of misuse or abuse then I don't think it should be covered.

Where did I judge you busmechanic?

I merely was making an observation.

ejn is a truly valuable member of the community.

Also I highly doubt you would find any illegal downloads on any of my PC's.

I am a software tester for Microsoft so I have no need for "Warez"

I also ran my own business for a while building & repairing PC's.

The name Morpheus Phreak is something I have used on message boards and BBS since long before "The Matrix" came out.  Morpheus is the God of Dreams.  Phreaking is a term used to describe the practices used on POTS/PNTS to work the phone systems.

It's also a play on the term MFing which had to do with the Blue Box systems used to bypass the normal carrier signals and route calls.

So I do apologize if you thought I was attempting to jump on you.  I was not, I was merely mentioning that the broken part is indeed part of the motherboard and that to fix or replace it, it will cost more than a little cash.

I agree a full motherboard replacement is not needed in most of these cases.  In certain cases however it may just be needed.
