It has to do with the video driver you are using. A couple of others have experienced the same problem with their systems. If the driver version you have starts with 173 uninstall and update it.

It might be worth it to completely uninstall and then reinstall it.

This is caused by the video drivers, almost certain of it.

Check this thread : http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=Tech_Talk_XPS_Laptop&thread.id=24624

I have a M1730 and ran through the same problem with some version of the drivers

Now I have 177.92 drivers from LaptopVideo2Go and everything runs fine.

Officially yes, but LaptopVideo2Go modify the INF file of the driver so that you can install it on other cards.  In most cases, there's no problem installing a driver for desktop series on a mobile card.

You can download the driver here : http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20270

Don't forget to download the modded INF file and follow the instructions here : http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9243

By the way, I have the 8700's card in my M1730.

Yes I have 8700 GT SLI.

I only played Mass Effet and it's alright.  As it was with 177.83 drivers I used before.

Other drivers I found that solved the booting from battery issue was the nVidia 167.51 BETA drivers.

*Did the 177.92 drivers solve your booting from battery problem?*

With the 177.92 driver, in Start/Programs/NVidia Corporation/PhysX properties/parameters tab, try to select "AGEIA PhyX" instead of "Geforce PhysX".

The problem with SLI is that you often need to jump from a driver to another to be able to run your games or 3D apps properly.

If those drivers are not good for you, uninstall it and try another.  It can be a lot of time wasting, but you don't have much choices...

Good luck and keep us posted.

But do you have 8700 GT SLI? Those have to be the worst drivers I ever installed

Now UT2004 can't run properly and deskscapes doesn't work anymore.

By the way, if you want to know a great forum where you can ask question about your M1730, you can go there : http://itcertforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16

There's a lot of people owning the m1730 and they can assist you in a lot of aspects.

Well I went to that site and some people agree that installing drivers from laptop2video.com might result in an unstable system.

Yea I checked the health of my battery and it is good. My computer can "start" windows but it will show the windows loading bar but will never get to the login screen that is the part where it gets stuck.

I forgot to mention I recently installed Vista Service Pack 1. It seems if I uninstall it, I can avoid this problem but I really wish there was a solid solution for this as I'm sure that I am the only one getting this problem.

I have m1730 with 8700. The Drivers that Dell shipped were terrible for SLI support. I was unable to run any game with SLI. I downloaded 175.32 from the NVIDIA site. When I installed SLI worked great on all games including CRYSIS and BIOSHOCK. However the machine stopped booting from battery. I uninstalled the drivers and went back to the original 156.61 and the machine booted fine from battery. I'm supprised that the 175.32 drivers got approved by Dell.
