RAM speed, bus, multipiler and such..

hello

i was just wondering, has dell locked the bios on its computers(mine's a D800), to prevent customers from tampering with these settings? I came to think about it, since i noticed that on my order-confirmation, the line "266Mhz DDR Mem." is written. I then assumed it ment that the DRAM bus was running 133Mhz. That was later confirmed via cpu-z. Since a label on the memory module states it is a PC2700-module, i was wondering why it wasn't running at 166Mhz, since the module is 2700..? I also whent looking for the setting for this(and multipiler-settings) in the bios, but i am unable to find them. Therefore i ask, if the bios is locked in any way..

Thanks,

I think is has to do with which CPU is in the system. Some of the P "M" CPUs are set to run the RAM at 133/266 and that controls the BUS speed no matter what speed of RAM is installed.

My D800 was also shipped with one 512MB PC2700 RAM module, the Dothan 2GHz Processor has a 400FSB but the RAM still operates at 266MHz so the limit may be in the mainboard.

Problems with BSOD's occurred when I added a second 512MHz RAM module which was PC2100 (that's all Dell offers on D800 UpGrade WebSite)

Problems went away when I removed this second module and I found a PC2700 module on Dells P60 UpGrade site.

I have no idea why Dell chose to equip my unit this way (it might run cooler?) but I see that the price is less for PC2700 than PC2100.
