kchat,

The terms can be a bit confusing, and people aren't always consistent in their use. Under Win98, these settings can be adjusted through Start | Settings | Control Panel | Power Management; in Win2K, Start | Settings | Control Panel | Power Options; in WinXP, Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Power Options.

The lowest level of power management is to turn off the display backlight and spin down the hard drive. (This is sometimes called Standby, although Windows calls it "Turn off monitor" and "Turn off hard disks".) This is invoked by not doing anything for a while and can be exited by moving the mouse or pressing a key.

The next level of power management is to turn off just about everything except the RAM, which must keep receiving power to keep the data in memory. This is called Standby by Windows, although it's more commonly called Suspend or Suspend to RAM (S2R). This mode is invoked after a certain period, or by pressing Fn-Esc. You can wake up your computer from Suspend by pressing the power button. (Don't hold it down, though, or you'll turn it off entirely.)

The last and deepest level is called Suspend to Disk, S2D, or Hibernation. In this, the contents of the system RAM are written to the hard disk, and the computer is shut down entirely. This is invoked after a certain period or by pressing Fn-A. While in this mode, the computer is completely shut down; to resume from Hibernation, press the power button.

Finally, the screensaver settings can be adjusted under Start | Settings | Control Panel | Display. I prefer to turn it off (set it to "(none)"), since the computer interprets the screensaver as activity and prevents my monitor from blanking or going to suspend.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Thx for explaining the terminalogies Dell!

I am in particular, talking about, dell's SUSPEND MODE (Fn-Esc)/Windows Stand-by mode

I had to re-install Windows on my I8200 recently including formating HD, according to your standard instruction from helpdesk (this is standard when technician has no clue). May the one who has done it knows how time consuming this procedure is!!

Still today, this problem is not rectified.

Enterring Stand-By mode takes long time (about 30sec-1min), and when woken up (by pressing power button) the computer hangs.

Practically nothing happends. But the mouse cursor moves (screen is blank or only some bits on the lower conner shows)......???????????????????????

I have read from Microsoft Newsgroup for owner of Dell NotePC, that updating Video Driver is the solution, but I have the lastest one from nVidia 44.82(?).

Please HELP!!!

Hi Tony,

I have solved my problem. But it seems like there are many alternative causes for it.

Tell me in more details what's happending and when, how this problme started. Hopely I can put some light into this.

Btw, I am happy with my Inspiron 8200 with WinXP, so let's get you to like it, too.

You can also e-mail me directly if you like, but this posting is here for others like me and you to 'see & solve' purpose.

I have the same problem with my inspiron 8200 w/XP.  I agree - please spend more energy on this issue.  There are many more people with this issue based on searching the boards.  I also believe there are many more that don't know about or don't use the boards.  Not all of us can reload windows or run diagnostics looking for a needle in a haystack.  Please give this issue more attention then reading from a support script.  I have to do a hard boot/power down at least once a day - this is unacceptable!!  My co-workers do NOT have this problem and they have windows XP on several other Dell notebooks models - so its not isolated to windows.

Tony - unhappy inspiron user.

I have this problem about once a day when I close the cover.  I notice the lightrs do not go off as they normally do and after a few minutes if I open the lid it still is on and says "Preparing to Stand By" and is completely frozen - hard boot is the only way to revive it.  Also, sometimes I will open the lide after a successfull stand by and the screen again says "Preparing to Stand By" and is frozen.  This usually happens after the first successful Stand By mode.  I have the latest service packs and patches from MS and running Windows XP Pro.  I do not have Nero pr PcAnywhere running, which is a dell support response I have seen on other postings.

How did you solve yours?  What was the issue?

Thanks

Tony M.

Mine was Video Driver, NIC Driver and Dell AccessDirect  Driver. It all went away after I upgraded to the lastest drivers. (the problem was finding the solution)

FYI, my problem stated after my WinXP re-installation with HD format.

I had the exact same behaviour in Stand-By as yours.

Tell me what Driver version you have for the following Drivers; Video, NIC(Network Card+wLan card if any), BIOS, Dell AccessDirect (if you use this), Touch pad Driver.

These oughta' do the tricks. Good luck with it and remember you have to keep the Driver up to date. It's like changing oil on the car so it runs well.

Come back to me if it doesn't help.

P.S.: Before you do anything, go to MS Windows Update page and have your Windows updated than do the above downloads!!!
