.wav codec needed???
I've been trying to use a certain audio production program but was unable to load any .wav files into the program. After going through all of it's settings, I realized that for whatever reason, it is just not loading .wav files.
When I try to open a .wav file with winamp, windows media player, or itunes, they all say that they can't play it because of a missing codec. I'm pretty sure that windows comes with the .wav codec, but I don't know what the file is called. Could anyone tell me? Maybe the file was deleted when I uninstalled a program. If that's not the case could there be another reason why this is happening?

Audacity did play the file on my computer as well. FLstudio's website basically yelled at me, so they're no help. What I am going to do (I'll let you know if it works) is manually convert all the .wav files using Audacity. Hopefully then FLstudio will work.
Yah, that should work, but your files are going to be huge if you covert them to PCM. I converted your click sound last night to see if it would work. And it did. But the file was over 10 times larger.
I'm just awfully curious as to where and how you got these files, and what program was used to encode them.

Thanks for all the help. There's really nothing else that can be done, I suppose. Problem solved... I guess...

There is NOTHING wrong with your audio or drivers or windows.
This is NOT a dell support issue.
Its not a wav its an .OGG file
I used the junk below and got it to play via Media player classic.
The sound that doesnt play sounds like a symbol from a drum set "ting"

OGG Codec Direct show filter below.
Rename to Exe and scan. Apparently many have heartburn with exe
Good point.

The simple id of this from media player classic says
Audio: Vorbis 44100Hz mono [Vorbis 0]
Stream 0

AM_MEDIA_TYPE:
majortype: MEDIATYPE_Audio {73647561-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}

Also you can encode vorbis, speex, FLAC and theora files using graphedit(DirectX9 SDK) or other similar program.

This is not a dell issue.
I downloaded all the files and Yes It did work.
You must right click the link below and save target as then rename to .exe
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/megacyberdude/oggds.jpg
The other links are not 404. Tried them they work fine. The OGG Direct show filter is 404 because the site is no longer there. Downloading the DIVX play codec which gives you player classic and following the instructions plays the ogg file after renaming it to .ogg from wav and then picking player classic to play it and then choosing the vorbis filter and codec and enabling all streams.
An OGM file, or a file with the extension .ogm, is an Ogg Media File. Like DVDs, OGM files can have switchable subtitle(s). The video part of our OGM files has been encoded with XviD, and the audio part has been encoded with Ogg Vorbis.
http://ld-anime.subforge.net/guide/ogm-en.php
What Do I Need to Play OGM?
You'll need four pieces of software.
Proper Video Codec
Get XviD 1.0.x and/or ffdshow-2004**** or newer.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=59355
OggDS 0.9.9.5
You can get it from Tobias's Page. You can install it by just double clicking.
This page is no longer on the web hense my jpg file needing to be renamed to .exe
http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm
VSFilter and CoreVorbis
Install Lazy Man's MKV (mkvinst_), and you'll have them too.

Im sticking a fork in you. You are done.

I don't want to get in the middle of frayed tempers here, but I too am really curious what difference it makes whether or not it is a Dell support issue. That statement seems to be implying that something is wrong with this thread.

This is not a Dell issue.
Why does this matter?

Atomic, I wonder what I'm missing here. Speed went to a great deal of trouble to try to provide an answer to Invot's question. What was the reason for attacking him?

I'm not sure I'm feeling your question out right, here. If you're asking me why I attacked Speed, I apologize if I came across that way. If you're asking me why Speed attacked the author of the thread, I'm not saying he did attack him, just overbearingly suggested that all the participants in the thread were to blame for something that really wasn't standing in need of rebuke.
I'm a little confused at Speed's intentions of declaring what is appropriate on this forum using all capital words, though, only to follow it with recommendations to fix the problem. Non-sequitor behavior. If his "fix" would have been more simple, I probably wouldn't have responded. But downloading non-disclosed files and having to rename them, to hear audio files seems to be an estoreric idea that normally people wouldn't think to do in order to play a file that was bundled with software downloads. I disagree with the manner in which Speed presented his "help" that is for sure. It was like somebody was pulling Speed's teeth to get information out of him that nobody asked him for in the first place.

The codec for the .wav file I posted cannot be placed in the windows directory, which was what I needed to do, but is emulated somehow by programs like audacity.
If FL Studio is going to use such an odd format for their audio, why should I use the program??? If I was willing to record my own version of, or convert manually, the files that came with it maybe then I would have kept the program, but I just don't have the time for a task like that.
Somewhere through this whole endeavor, the rest of my .wav files started playing. When I first started troubleshooting, no .wav files worked. I'm not sure what step in this process made the difference. Most likely it was the codec pack atomic gave me a link to.
I am still getting the same error message when I run DXDiag; Does the 5160 support audio hardware buffering? What is causing this error if that's the case?
Yeah, other than that, everything is fine audio-wise. I've been having a problem with DVDs, but that's another topic, another thread.
Once again, thanks for all the help. Thanks to atomic for showing me audacity, which is an excillent program. Thanks to speedy for all the files... although I'm unsure of what they were supposed to do. lol.
