X300 BIOS Password Problems

Hello All,

I am having bigtime problems with my X300,
initially the well known dying USB Ports problem
The System is still under warrenty so dell replaced the motherboard and that fixed this issue.
Now I am not able to add any BIOS  related passwords (like Boot on Password or Hard Disk Password) I hit the F2 key to get into the BIOS  and on the screen where I should be able to make these changes ( Page 7 of 7) I am not able to move to the fields using the up/down arrow keys( not able to highlight any fields on this screen( page 7 of 7). my BIOS is A08. I am not able to re-flash the A08 BIOS, I get a message that says I already have this version on my system. I am not ablle to flash to any version less than A08, it says my system has the latest version than the version I am trying to flash.Dell's Tech's think it s a motherboard problem and replaced the motherboard two more times, and that still DIDNOT FIXTHE PROBLEM. tHEY ARE GOING TO REPLACE THE MB ONE MORE TIME. I FEEL THIS IS A BUGGY BIOS ISSUE.MAY BE I AM WRONG, AND DELL KNOWS HOW BAD THE MB ON THIS SYSTEM ARE.

ANYONE HAS A SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM( Able to Add BIOS Passwordson X300) OR SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

Thanks

Do you have the Service Tag set in BIOS on Page 1? If not, you need to reset the one on the Paper strip on the bottom of the laptop using Asset.Com on a one time Basis only. Get it right the first time and verify it, as you will not be able to delete whatever you enter if it is wrong.

To reflash with the same BIOS version, add   (space)  /forceit to the flash command  using the floppy method in DOS.

H leduke30,
no , the Service tag was not set on page 1 of the BIOS screen. I searched my X300 system utilities CD but I can't find the program asset.com anywhere on it. could you please guide me  where  I can  download it from  the dell site. I searched in the usual download page but can't find it there.

I hope this fixes my problem.

Thanka a lot

This is for the Suspend to Disk setup, but it also includes the Asset.Com File. You download the program and unzip it to make a diskette on any computer. put it in the laptop and use it to boot into DOS. The command to type at the A: prompt  is    asset /s xxxxxxx     The X's represents the Service Tag you need to enter; notice there are spaces in the command; it will not work without them. It can also be used to set an Asset Tag and Owners Tag, the commands for those are     asset xxxxxxx    and
asset /o xxxxxx

You should do this in DOS from a floppy diskette. I do not believe it will work in a DOS Shell. Follow the instructions previously given to naveeg
