100% flash progress without progress

I installed a fresh MS Windows 10 and after that SupportAssist on a brand new Dell Precision 7540. Hoping to turn into a dual boot configuration.

SupportAssist started a bios update and this bios update got stuck somehow. The screen shows.

  • Updating your firmware
  • Do not power down your system
  • Flash progress 100%
  • Updating System BIOS with Bios Guard

I cannot turn it off. I can press power down for minutes, nothing happens. The battery cannot be removed I think without opening the system.

Is this brand new laptop dead meat now? I only had it for a few days. Why does Dell do Bios updates this  way? This doesn't make sense. Why would you suggest BIOS updates that are untested and not working?

Welcome to the Dell Community @LissB  @Patrick N1  @ballistic2 @Sugarmoose @Anonymous

Do not use Support Assist to install anew BIOS.

First method:

Create a new folder on your desktop named “BIOS Update”

Then download your BIOS update from your Driver Support page.

Copy the update to that folder you just created.

Close all Windows and Apps you may have open.

Go to the folder and right click on the update file and “Run as Administrator”

Second method:

Create a bootable USB drive using “Rufus”

https://rufus.ie/

Copy the BIOS update to the bootable USB drive you just created..

Insert USB drive, power-on and start tapping the “ F12 “ key.

Boot from USB and run the BIOS update.

After reboot test and post any results.

Best regards,

U2

@ballistic2

So many post about problems with both.

I just prefer manually installing updates.

If you know where your Driver Support page is then use it.

Hi, there's Precision Mobile 7740 (Xeon beast, Win10). Updating from 1.10.2 to 1.11.2 ("Urgent update!"). Tried all the possible from DELL Support Assist, Command Update, direct .exe run "As Administrator", using BIOS update utility. Always the same – flash progress stucks at 100%, waiting for an hour or so... Forcing reboot (power-off button 3 times for 15 sec.)... BIOS corruption detected, autorun recovery BIOS, 1.10.2 again...

I had the problem with my 7580 also, in fact my flash went ok for the bios and intel ME but its killed my USB controller. I now have no USB type C.

Spoke to dell about it, they couldn't really care less now that the warranty is out... lesson learned...

a) dont update firmwares after the warranty is out, and b) leave dell alone in future as I've had far better support (out of warranty) from IBM/Lenovo..

waiting to find a community solution on how to re-flash just the USB controller element as I can no longer go back in firmware due to the Intel ME upgrade (apparently)..

good luck with yours!

I am having the same problem.  I haven’t had this computer and have used. It a handful of times and have NOTHING but problems with it.  I should have just bought an Apple one, at least you can get ahold a person.    I have read thru the all of the issues, and NOT ONE person can help with this issue since 2019?  Bestbuy wants charge me $50 just to make an appointment with them…..SO FRUSTRATING!!

Same thing has happened to me.  I can’t power the laptop off. It isn’t responding to anything.  What is going on?!

Dell wont care if its under warranty they should replace, if its out of warranty like when they killed mine with the updates then your on your own..  I suggest buying another manufacturers product. I'm in the process of switching all my company computers and servers from dell to IBM.. not having this again and have thus far never come across these unrecoverable situations with IBM.

Ever since these Millennials graduated into the workforce, things have been going to $|-|!T.
It's gotten to the point where you really can't update or upgrade Anything anymore without running into severe problems. Best to buy it as is and don't try to do any patching. Besides, by the time everything quits working and you're Forced to update or die, just let it die. It's probably time for a new one anyway, right ? Keep your Technology Trust Fund funded because, you know, Inflation.

That's what participation awards get us.

And their User Interfaces these days. Flat, boring, colorless, lifeless. This all started after Jobs passed away as well. I HATE these Modern Minimalist Themeless UI's. They . And it's all because the Millennials are just Lazy. They have No creativity. I remember Black and White, or grayscale, TV. You think any of them would want to watch B&W TV ? Then why do we have to suffer with these Z0mbie Interfaces ?

And No, I'm Not a Boomer. I was born After that generation.

Apologies for my last rant. I mean, kids these days, right ? STAY OFF MY LAWN !
Heh-heh...

Anyway, my Latitude 7480 hung at 100% and that scary Do Not Power Off warning.
I held the Power Button down for 10 seconds then pressed it repeatedly quite a few times.

The white LED indicator on the front bezel flashed.

I then held the Power Button down for another 10 seconds. It Powered Off. Powered it back On again and got a message that the date was wrong and to Press F12 to enter the BIOS Settings.

Hope this helps those of you still throwing your bottles into the sea. Sorry, not sure it will work for everybody.

Not sure if this is relevant to everyone’s specific situation be but thought I’d share anyway. I woke up to this issue and after reading up about other peoples’ issues, I went to unplug my Dell XPS 9510 to discharge the unremovable battery. The PC is connected to a Dell dock via type C USB Thunderbolt. Before removing the power, I unplugged the docking cable and the flash progress immediately began to move and was complete in about 5 minutes.

Bottom line: if your PC is connected to a dock, try unplugging it to successfully complete the update.

This is a problem that Dell is quite aware of. This is my second time going through a firmware flash.   I crossed my fingers but the same thing. Locking up at 100%. Unplug the power wait for it to die and then restart it. I don’t know if they’re choosing not to fix this or don’t know how but either way that’s not a good sign.
