Command Update Utility 4.1 won't run

I am having trouble getting Dell Command update to run correctly on an older system (e7440). When I open the utility, I get a blue window with the Dell logon, and a grey rectangle about where you would expect to see an "ok" or similar option:

launch screenlaunch screen

The system was running 3.1.3, so I uninstalled that, rebooted and installed the latest version, but it is giving me the same message. I have verified the device is compatible with this version of the app, so that should not be an issue. Any advice/suggestions for this issue would be appreciated, ty

I have the exact same situation with a Latitude 5450. I've tried every version of Dell Command Update from 3.0 to 4.1. Does anyone have a solution?

I have had this problem on two Latitudes (one E5450 and one E5440) since around the same time as the original post (May 2021). I have completely uninstalled DCU, downloaded the latest version listed for each service tag (currently 4.2.1), and still get the blue screen on launch. I have tried every version I can find (2.4.0 and 3.1.3 and 4.1.0) but none of them work.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Add one more E5450 with the same problem. I've installed/uninstalled every version of Dell Command Update that I can find, and I get the exact same blue box with grey button as pictured in original post.

Just about every Dell system I have experiences this problem.  I contacted Dell support about it and they won't touch it because I clone my drives on these systems even though they are still under warranty.  What I have learned, as a workaround, is uninstall Dell Command Update (DCU), delete the UpdateService folder in program files (x86)\dell and in ProgramData\Dell, then manually remove the service DellClientManagementService (open admin cmd prompt and run sc delete DellClientManagementService).  After that, reboot and then re-install an older version of DCU like 4.1 (for Win10 version) or regular DCU version 2.3.1.  That method works for me just about every time.

The reason DCU does not run on more recent versions has something to do with the service DellClientManagementService not being able to start after you launch DCU.  It's currently beyond me as to why and Dell won't help me.  Maybe one day they will address.

I also discovered that if you remove DCU from Program&Features under the control panel, that it also can still exist in the Apps section under the Win10 settings (start menu -> gear).  If you uninstall from both places, remove the service, and then delete the folders as described above that you can get the latest version of DCU 4.4 (at time of this writing) to work.

I have found since DCU 3.1 the desktop application is broken. You have to install the native app for Win10 and if it does not run after you re-image the PC you have 2 options. The CLI option via batch file works on all versions up to 4.5, which is the latest stable on 4-5-22.

1. Verify "DellClientManagementService" is running using services.msc, if not start the service

2. Or write a simple batch file to run from CLI:  "C:\Program Files\Dell\CommandUpdate\dcu-cli.exe" /applyupdates -reboot=enable

Download the latest build - Dell Command Update | Dell US

To obtain the MSI for your custom image to push out via SCCM, install the .exe and attempt to uninstall to find the MSI location. Typically found in C:\Windows\Installer\ on a client PC.

I had the same issue and wasted lots of time trying to figure it out. Eventually I realized that none of my PC's information was showing under msinfo32.exe, and ended up finding a forum link online that detailed how to fix that issue and bring back the machine specs. Once I followed the steps to reset the WMI service and restarted my computer, the DCU program worked without issue.

You my friend, are a gentleman and a scholar. This was the fix. I tried all of the above methods (while laughing at Vertech saying you had to uninstall it from both appwiz.cpl and through the "apps & features"...doubt that seeing as how they are essentially one in the same)

Thank you for this.

@mr_sherman79 Thanks!  I just experienced this exact issue just now on Win 11. Following the steps outlined in the link to reset the WMI repository fixed my issue with the blue dialog exactly as pictured above. I know this thread is old, but I just wanted to say thanks.
