Troubleshooting Laptop Cursor Issues

If your laptop cursor is not working, follow these steps to diagnose and fix the problem:

  1. Check for Dirt or Grease: Ensure that the touchpad and your finger are clean and free from any dirt, grease, or liquids.
  2. Restart Your Laptop: A simple restart can often resolve minor glitches. Use a wired USB mouse or Bluetooth mouse if available, or hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to turn off the laptop.
  3. Unplug External Devices: Disconnect all external devices except the power cable, including:

    • Speakers
    • Printers
    • Scanners
    • USB devices
    • External monitors
    • External keyboards
    • External mice
  4. Boot Without Touching the Touchpad: Turn the laptop back on without touching the touchpad, as it goes through a calibration process during booting.
  5. Update BIOS and Drivers: Ensure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are updated to the latest version. Refer to Dell's documentation for instructions on how to perform these updates.
  6. Test the Touchpad: Once the laptop is booted, test the touchpad to see if the cursor is responsive. If it works, reconnect external devices one at a time to identify any potential conflicts.
  7. Check Touchpad Settings: Make sure the touchpad is enabled. Refer to Dell's documentation on how to disable or enable the touchpad.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider restoring or reinstalling the operating system as a last resort. For further assistance, consult Dell's support resources.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

Well You can check for the following as well:

  • Update or Reinstall Mouse/Touchpad Drivers
  • Disable “Palm Check” or Gesture Blocking
  • Check Accessibility Options Make sure “Mouse Keys"(control cursor with numpad) is off.
