Dell 5490 - problem with bios update

Hello,

I cannot update bios in my dell E5490. Current version is 1.2.3.

Steps that i've already made:
1. Tried to install through windows installer - everything went ok - app told that i need to restart computer to end the task. After reboot i saw that i have the same version as before update.
2. I restarted computer and tried to install BIOS by F12 option and then by BIOS update menu. Still the same - no error codes, computer restarted but still the same BIOS version.
3. Disabled Virtualization - still the same - cannot update.
4. Tried to install older version of BIOS 1.7.0 and 1.3.2 - both by windows and by boot menu - still i have 1.2.3

I have problem with ACPI - my laptop cannot correctly suspend and i think this is bios related problem that update could fix. Errors that i have in event viewer after trying to suspend :

"The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly."

Thanks

@spychu14 thanks for getting in touch, I believe the issue could be one of two issues, either the motherboard is corrupt preventing the BIOS from updating or you are trying to update to a BIOS that is significantly newer than the one you have installed.

When it comes to BIOS retroactively applying BIOS updates, we recommend updating every second BIOS revision. Here is the list of BIOS updates available for your system -

As you are currently on 1.2.3 I would recommend starting 1.3.2 and then 1.5.0 and then 1.7.0 then 1.9.0 and finally the latest version 1.10.1

If that fails please can you try an RTC reset on the system to reset the BIOS.

Start the RTC reset with the system powered off and connected to AC power. Press and hold the power button for thirty (30) seconds. The system RTC Reset occurs after you release the power button.

More detail can be found in the following support article - https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln304892/how-to-reset-real-time-clock-rtc-to-recover-your-dell-portable-system?lang=en

Please pay particular attention to this statement -

NOTE: If AC power is removed from the system during the process or the power button is held less than 25 seconds or longer than 40 seconds, the RTC Reset process is aborted.

I'll drop you a private message for your service tag details.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @spychu14

Try making a bootable USB drive using "Rufus"

https://rufus.ie/

Then download the BIOS file and copy it to the bootable USB.

Insert USB drive and power-on tapping the " F12 " key.

Boot USB drive and run BIOS update file.

Best regards,

U2

NOTE:When I have tried to skip many BIOS versions if it was too many I would receive a message that a certain BIOS version needed to be installed first.

@spychu14 you could try flashing 1.2.3 again as it could be that one that is corrupted.

Alternatively, try creating the bootable USB key as mentioned by U2.
