Dell Lattitude 3310 2 in 1 How do I boot to an external CD or USB stick?

Latitude 3310 2-in-1

Latitude 3310 2-in-1

Hi,

I've always used ImageX to backup my computer. I got this laptop (without a CD Drive) so I cant boot to my ImageX CD.

I bought a USB CD drive, but cant figure out how to boot to it. The only posts I see are how to do a BIOS update boot. I need to be able to boot to the USB CD drive (or a USB stick if necessary) so I can do a backup. I have looked at the boot menu and the BIOS settings and there is no choice to boot to an external device. Please Help !

If you do not see the drive in the boot list with a manual trip (F12 at powerup), the system does not see it as UEFI-bootable.

It looks like you must manually build a Windows PE bootable flash drive -- the software does not seem to have the ability to do this for you.  See here:

Many modern PCs won't boot from CD drive the way older PCs would.

I'm not familiar with ImageX. If it can give you an ISO of its boot environment, I suggest that you use a tool like Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive from that ISO. That is likely to be more easily successful than trying to get a CD to boot.

Thanks for the post. I actually built a USB stick using Rufus with ImageX on it. However, there is no option for the laptop to boot to a USB stick. I see posts on the same laptop where they have screen shots of a USB boot option, but not on mine. Only thing I can think of is that BIOS update removed the USB boot option.

The bootable USB media must be UEFI-compliant -- check with the ImageX supplier to find out how to make a UEFI-compliant bootable flash drive.

With that drive connected, press F12 a few times at powerup.  If the system sees the drive as UEFI-bootable, it will appear in the boot list.  Select it and the system will then boot from the flash drive.

There are other imaging utilities that can make UEFI-bootable media -- for this year at lest, the free version of Macrium Reflect is the front-runner (the reason for the time frame is that the free version is going away in January, 2024 in favor of the the requirement for purchasing the commercial version).

Is there anyone out there with my laptop that is able to boot to a USB stick or USB DVD drive? Would love to hear back from you. Or maybe you have an alternate way of backing up your this particular model laptop you can share...

Thanks,

Eric

That is exactly what I did, using this guide:  https://scribbleghost.net/2019/04/18/create-windows-pe-flash-drive/

The laptop does give you a USB option if the USB stick is UEFI formatted AND the software is valid. In my case, I had loaded a 32 bit version of ImageX. I loaded a 64 bit version of ImageX and it booted, but hung up. after some more research, I found that ImageX had been replaced with DISM for anything after Windows 7. DISM is natively loaded on the Windows PE O/S. After a lot of trial and error, I was able to boot to the Windows PE USB stick and create a backup with DISM.  Thank You one and all for your help !
