Dell Precision 5540 fan in linux
Hello,
I install Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell Precsion 5540. The laptop is very hot. I heard the fan always working in low profile. I try to modify the fan speed with i8kfan. But I can't success change it. I heard the fan speed change and go back at normal speed.
I see on some forum that the BIOS take the control of the fan. Can I disable the bios control ? If not, can I change the BIOS settings to be sure fan is running faster ?
For information, the bios is up to date. and the uname -a :
Linux SC-C221-LP08-lin 5.4.0-48-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 10 10:58:49 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Best regards,
Julien

I've also faced this issue. My power scheme is adaptive, so not sure what the issue is. Will this have an impact on battery or the system overall? The machine runs significantly hot, especially near the charging point, when connected to the charger.

The fan issue may be related to the Wi-Fi issue here: https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-Developer-Systems/Painfully-slow-Wifi-on-Ubuntu-20-04-on-XPS-13-7390-Dev-Edition/td-p/7589185
Not sure if the updates of the last few months helped with this.

@DELL-Jesse L Has anything ever changed on this subject? I've got a Latitude 5540 that refuses to stay at normal temps when inside of Fedora 42. If I reboot to the BIOS, the BIOS appears to remember it's job and get everything cool again. I only mention this because inside of Fedora, I can idle and the temps easily reach 50C. The laptop feels physically hot - too hot - before it decides to kick the fans on.
Again, if I go to the BIOS it seems to remember that it needs the fan at these temps and turns it on - the same temps it was at inside of Fedora with the fans off.
Fan is set to "cool" and performance, balanced.
