E6420 XFR Cpu Upgrade

Finally realized it was an XFR laptop a year or two ago, and finally had the chance to buy one for $150 USD shipped. Great condition. No screen delam, touchscreen edition, with i5 2520m processor.

I've already upgraded to 2 x 8 gb = 16gb ram, for $20 usd. And now i'd like to upgrade the processor to a quad core as well, and the minimum step up is 45w TDP. Which I am willing to try.

I saw that at least one person has confirmed i7 2630qm working, but has anyone tried anything faster than that?
The 2860qm looks like the fastest 45w TDP you can get without going up to 55w (which I don't want to do)

Any experiences with quad cores? Does it work ok? Doesn't overheat too crazy?

Yes, the i7-2860QM works in many XFR models and is the fastest 45W TDP upgrade confirmed stable. Thermal performance is acceptable with clean heatsink and fresh paste.

@jill598muncy Hi Jill, thank you for this info i've got a i7 2670qm on the way (I initially ordered a 2820qm (new) but decided to cancel this order). Paid about $12 USD for this used processor so I will experiment around, the rest of this laptop is in great condition.

I do wish the screen was upgradeable to 1080p ...
