E6440 AMD 8690M Driver Update

Is there any alternative to the outdated AMD driver for the Latitude E6440? Or are we just stock with the outdated version?

Welcome to the Dell Community  @korlems

Just checking: Did you install the Intel driver first???

Intel HD Graphics 4000, 5000, 500, and P500 series Driver:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=www9y&oscode=wt64a&productcode=latitude-e6440-laptop

I have learned to always install/update the Intel driver first.

This is a prerequisite:

Scroll down on your driver page and look for "Important Information"

 Important Information

IMPORTANT: The Intel graphics driver must be installed first before installing the AMD graphics drivers! AMD Radeon HD 8690M Graphics driver.

Make sure the Intel driver is installed and up to date before installing the AMD driver!!!

Best regards,

Have you tried this version? Notice the release date and the updated date, so possibly a newer release. Also this page from AMD.

Hello JOcean,

Thanks for the reply.

The first link download, flags a "The update installer operation is unsuccessful." error when i try to install.

However the second link, downloading from AMD website directly, i have tried that twice. The installation freezes up my laptop either mid installation or just after installation. I had to run a system restore each time to get my system working again.

Am i missing something here?

Hello @U2CAMEB4ME

Thanks for the solution, it actually worked, after i uninstalled the old driver completely and deleted all traces of it. I froze after the installation though, but powering it off and back on resolved it.

Thanks.

PS: Can you guide on the best configurations for Gaming?

This method did not work for me.

Fresh install of windows 10,  installed latest chipset driver, installed latest intel graphics driver, attempted your method. System locks up either before it boots in to windows or immediately after it boots in to windows.

Only time the system works is if I use the ancient old dell amd driver.

I want to use the latest amd driver, is their anyone here that has an explanation for why the latest driver doesnt work? like a real technical answer? something to give us a clue as to what to edit to make it work?

I wish your method worked, but it doesnt and I have tried it on multiple E6440's.

can you post a screenshot of your Latitude E6440 with the LATEST AMD DRIVER?

And please realize we do not want the old dell driver off the download page for this model, we want the latest amd driver.

We already know the old dell amd driver works, but it is old and doesnt give us the control panel.

I wish dell didnt suck.

Did you ever figure this out? I have been messing with this E6440 for hours. Its the latest Video driver that causes mine to freeze. I've tried everything. I will probably just stay with version 15.201.1101, A01

https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-21.4.1-win10-64bit-apr20.exe

That solves all your problems,no freezing and its a 2021 driver, works flawlessly.

Took me a really long time to find

So,changing what i first said.....the installation part is a bit tricky, first you download and extract, not install, the latest amd oem driver on Dell's website, before doing this, make sure you have the latest intel graphics driver, bios and chipset drivers from Dell. Then download and extract this amd driver, best driver throughout my tests, https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/prographics/win10-radeon-pro-software-enterprise-21.q1.2.exe ,once it unzips and launches, close the app, reboot into safe mode and launch the amd cleanup utility in the new amd folder. After thats done, restart the computer, install the dell oem driver through device manager by clicking update driver on the "video controller",then restart the laptop after its done, then click on update driver on the "radeon 8690m driver" and select the folder containing the newer driver from amd.Once thats done, restart again and then run the new amd driver setup like you normally would and it would install without problems.Have a nice day, took a really long time to fully understand.
