Latitude 5420 USB-C Stopped working with external display
The computer stopped sending a signal to it's external display through the USB-C ports today (was working yesterday).
Windows notifications pop-up to say the display is limited, and to check the drivers.
Troubleshooting so far:
- updated all display drivers
- uninstalled / re-installed all display drivers
- tried a different monitor
- tried different USB-C cables (3 different ones)
- installed all of the Windows Updates
The USB-C ports on the laptop are still charging -- just not sending display out.
Any help / ideas appreciated!

If you've already tried updating the drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them, using a different monitor, different cables and installing all Windows updates, there are a few more troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue with the USB-C ports not sending display out on your Latitude 5420:
Check the BIOS settings: Check the BIOS settings to ensure that the USB-C ports are set to display out. You can access the BIOS by restarting your computer and pressing the key that appears on the screen (usually F2 or Del) to enter the BIOS settings.
Check the settings in the operating system: Make sure that the display settings in the operating system are set to use the external monitor.
Check the settings in the graphics card: Make sure that the graphics card settings are set to use the external monitor.
Check for hardware damage: Inspect the USB-C ports on the laptop for any physical damage, such as bent pins or debris that could be blocking the connection.
Run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter: Go to Control Panel > Troubleshooting > Hardware and Devices. This troubleshooter will automatically check for common issues and try to fix them.
Run Dell diagnostic: Run the Dell diagnostic tool to check for any hardware or software issues.
Contact Dell Support: If you continue to experience issues, contact Dell Support for further assistance.
It's important to keep in mind that the issue may be hardware related, and in this case the best option would be to contact Dell Support. They may suggest to replace the USB-C port or the motherboard depending on the diagnosis.

Thank you for responding @ewongsmx .
It started working this morning -- as if by magic. I'd like to think it was my winning smile, but honestly, I've no idea what happened. Best I can guess -- maybe a hung process finally sorted itself out -- though I'd rebooted it a bunch of times yesterday to no avail.
Anyway, thank you again,

You're welcome! It's great to hear that the issue has been resolved. Sometimes, issues like this can be caused by a temporary glitch or a hung process, and a reboot can help to resolve it. It's also possible that the issue resolved itself without any intervention, as these things can sometimes be unpredictable. If the problem arises again, don't hesitate to reach out for assistance.

I had similiar problem with Dell Vostro. I am using 2 monitors, 1-HDMI , 1-USB-C. 2 weeks ago USB-C monitor stopeed working, but it was working sometimes for few seconds (generally when I turned on the computer)
After many trials I found out thet I need to use the monitor with 59,94Hz , if I set to something else 120Hz, 60Hz, 100Hz.. it is not working.
