Latitude 7440 External Microphone Question

Latitude 7440 Win 8.1  control panel  Dell AUDIO (MAXX Audio complete with pop up selection window) and windows SOUND

When I connect an external mic to the audio output jack a the Dell AUDIO box pops up. it has several options for selection such as Skulcandy headset, headset etc. but nothing for a simple microphone.

In windows recording devices I have the microphone array, a microphone icon and stereo card. the microphone is always not connected until I disable microphone array. However, I cannot playback sound as playback is via speakers and headset.

Do I need a new driver or something? I'd appreciate your help.

As a Sunday treat I have attached a picture of my **bleep** Megan in my profile

Hello Mark. I don't think there is a Latitude 7440 model. There is a 7404. Might it be an E7440?

Sorry but I don't understand if your question is about recording or playback. If it is about recording, the Latitude E7440's audio port consists of a single combo jack. Combo jacks (aka headset jack) were originally designed for use with smart phone headsets (headphone plus microphone combined into a single plug). As such, if your microphone has a conventional stereo plug (aka TRS -- tip/ring/sleeve) then when you plug it into the combo jack there is no physical connection for the signal.

In order for a mic to work, it must have a TRRS plug (tip/ring/ring/sleeve). Normally stand-alone mics do not have that kind of plug as they are mainly found on headsets. You might be able to find an adapter to go from TRS to TRRS. If so, when you plug it in select "headset" as the type of device.

Assuming that your mic has a TRS plug, I think it might work out better to get an inexpensive usb audio jack and plug the mic into that. Amazon has several of those from different manufacturers.

@ML100"However, I cannot playback sound as playback is via speakers and headset."

If the question is about monitoring the input signal, right click on the microphone, select properties, go to the Listen tab, and check the box.
