Thanks but alas. Settings/Sound/Input devices shows only Rec. Playback (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) in dropdown. No Microphone option, no list of choices?

I have a E6230 running Windows 10.

For me when I go to Settings ---> Sound . And scroll down to Input, I see Microphone (High Definition Audio Device). Below that I see Test your microphone .

I saw in another post that there is a setting to enable/disable microphone in BIOS.

So, reboot, tap F2 repeatedly to get into BIOS.

Go to System Configuration ---> Miscellaneous Devices

@auntiebk

What version is your BIOS?

It is always risky to update the BIOS, but I know I did update the BIOS on my E6230. Sometimes you do need the newest BIOS for Windows 10.

The other option is to buy an external microphone.

Thanks so much for trying to help.  Alas, the Bios doesn't list a separate Microphone.  Saw this posting, but neither does my pc have the "High Definition Audio Device (Not  IDT High Def...  this is important.) " driver referred to.   https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_devices/idt-high-definition-audio-codec-not-working-on/570a5038-e48e-43f3-af75-95da61447c87?tab=AllReplies#tabs

I'm a little afraid to uninstall the drivers and reinstall as the Microsoft guy recommends... :

BOIS version A22,

Audio controller: IDT 92HD93

Don't see where microphone appears in BIOS/setup?

Tried plugging in my earbuds to the jack on the left edge, could hear but speaking brought forth no sound.

Really appreciate your efforts!

Are you saying you don't see System Configuration   ---   Miscellaneous Devices in the BIOS  ? ? ?

Sorry my bad confused BIOS with Settings/System/Sound/Input devices.

In Bios, System Configuration, Miscellaneous Devices YES there is a listing for microphone and it is enabled, as are the other misc devices (internal modem, module bay, media card etc.)

In Settings/System/Sound/Input devices, only Rec. Playback (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) appears.  There is no separate drop down entry for a microphone.

Is the Rec. Playback IDT etc the sound card?  Could it be bad since when I plugged earbuds into the jack the ear buds' microphone didn't pick up my sound either?

Rreally really appreciate your help.

@auntiebk

In Device Manager, I have a section Audio inputs and outputs with two entries:

Microphone (High Definition Audio Device)

Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)

both are using Microsoft drivers not IDT drivers.

I am suggesting that you uninstall the IDT drivers following the procedure described here

--> https://www.digitalcitizen.life/completely-remove-faulty-drivers-windows

And let Windows 10 find the needed drivers.

@auntiebk

I am also running the latest version of Windows 10 Pro  v1909

The E6230 that I have and the E6430 that you have both have the same audio controller IDT92HD93 , so you should be able to get the internal microphone to work.

nyc10036  I really appreciate your time and efforts.
   I'm running   Windows v

10.0.17763.1098 , with delayed windows updates like most businesses use.   I removed the IDT driver as suggested, next time I looked at Device manager, the IDT device was gone and in its place the generic "High Definition Audio Device" appeared.

Now "No input devices found" in Settings/Sound/ Input.

It seems the microphone array? is part of the onboard webcam?  Is there a separate driver for that?

Device manager also lists 4 NVIDIA High Definition Audio devices, one each in locations 0, 1, 2 and 3.  Could there be some kind of conflict between audio devices?

Thoroughly confused, frustrated and exhausted.

:}

You are running Windows 10  v1809 which is 2 builds older than the one I am running.  That's what I get when I search on 17763.1098  .

I am running Windows 10 v1909  which is OS build 18363.720

Thanks @nyc10026.

My pc guy advises this model laptop has no internal mic.  Was security feature designed for biz execs.  There was a docking station option that included a mic.

Go figure.

Thanks again!
